I'm wondering if it's possible to import a previously unfinished project (in VMS 9) into my new VMS HD Platinum. I haven't worked with either in several months but have the old project I need to finish. Thanks.
Like Eugenia says, your old project should open in the new version (VMS 11) without any extra effort on your part. Just run VMS 11, locate your project, and open it.
However, if you save the project from VMS 11, you will no longer be able to open it in VMS 9. It's best to keep a copy of the project just as it is in case you have to revert to VMS 9 for some reason. (Sometimes a new VMS release "breaks" some feature that worked fine in an earlier version.) When you open the project in VMS 11, immediately save it with a new name and keep the original one just as it is.
I left out some info: I'm also working on a new computer. So I moved all the original files to an external hard drive. So now it's VMS 10 hd platinum running on my new computer. I'm opening Vegas and trying to open my project - it wasn't finding the files on the new computer of course so I selected to search on the ext. hard drive. No problems. But, it loads and everything looks fine, but it seems to be bogged down and just won't play the movie or anything. My computer has a fast processor and is a quad-core with plenty of RAM. Although i could use more. Could this be an issue of the ext. hard drive not feeding my computer fast enough? I copied all the files onto the computer's hard drive but still the same problem when I specify to use them from that location. I'm considering just starting over with the raw files i now have on my new computer. The files I'm referring to are all .mpg files and some .jpeg
Perhaps the system is getting bogged down working with the project and media files on an external drive? You'll hear a lot of folks recommending to install media on a different drive (and there are some good reasons for this), but in many cases they mean a logical drive, not a physical drive.
Try copying this one project and its related media files to a folder on your computer. When you open the project that is resident on your computer, it will prompt you to find the media, which you stated you know how to do.
When I get these prompts, I always find the first file for Vegas, then Vegas prompts whether to use all the other media in the same location and I choose Yes. This always seems faster to me than letting the computer search. Oh and be sure to save your project once the media is found.
Actually a physical drive is preferred over a logical drive. However, what's really important is to use an internal drive instead of external. Most internal drives are a dozen to 100 times faster access than external drives.
I wasn't very clear. I did transfer the files from the external hd to the new computer's drive. It behaved exactly the same way though. Kimberly, I did all that then prompted the Vegas to "yes to all' when looking further. It's funny how the title bar in Vegas says "(not responding)" but if you wait long enough, it sets up fine. Anyway, I did all that and the same result. Project loaded fine, but bogs up pretty quickly. I'm always afraid to save that project though as it behaves like crap. There's nothing in my opinion to save. I still have the original files. I'm going to reedit for fear of getting even further along and running into problems. I'll be set after this project as I'll be using the same computer, camcorder, and software all the way through! lesson learned.
Actually, now that I think about it. I'd rather not reedit, lol. The main reason I'm working with all new stuff is because of the camera. Perhaps I wrongly assumed I'd have to upgrade to VMS HD 10. Well, when I first got the camera, I thought I'd be working with just HD so I definitely need the newer VMS for that. turns out for this project I'm not. I'm only shooting xp+ which is 12mbps. The files are .mts off my Canon. Will VMS 9.0 handle these files? If it will, then I'll just stick to the old version for now. That sure would help.
