Importing from Camera

I just bought new I7 smokin comp so heres the ? Im using a canon Hd i used to import through the cannon software that came with camera.since im using Sony Vegas for my editing and burning do i need to install cannon software since i wont be using it for editing any longer.From the camera import into windows media where then i can use the explore in Vegas to pull up whatever clips i want??? Secondly is there a way to only import just a few clips and not all that are on camera when not using cannon software? Thanks

You are not mentioning if your camera is AVCHD, HDV, or a dSLR or P&S digicam. For HDV you can install the freeware HDVSplit utility: http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm If your camera is one of the rest kinds mentioned, then you can use Windows Explorer, navigate to the various folders in the mounted camera drive, and copy away the mov or mts files.
