Importing HDV problems!!

I am trying to import HDV footage from my Sony HVR HD1000 professional camcorder however sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 only lets me import DV footage (not the HD version). I use a 4pin-4pin firewirk (i.Link) cable but why can I still not import HDV footage??

The camcorder is yet recognised by the PC so I'm really confused.

Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Hello Hebby:

First a couple of questions.

I am not familiar with your camera. Does it record on a miniature tape, which means the footage is DV or HDV? Or does it record on a hard drive or memory stick, which means the footage is AVCHD.

In Vegas, you Capture DV and HDV footage. You Import AVCHD footage.

Let's assume the footage is DV or HDV. I know you said it was, but it never hurts to ask : )

Open Movie Studio. From your main menu choose Project/Capture Video. A dialog box will pop-up. From there you can select DV or HDV and the utility will walk through the Capture process.

My advice is to enable scene detection. This creates a separate clip for each time you pushed start/stop on your camera. If you don't have this enabled, you will get one giant clip rather than lots of small ones. You can always change this later if you prefer having one giant clip.

There is also an option to stop capture on loss of focus. Some computers go to sleep if the mouse doesn't move for a while. This may cause your capture to stop so if you have this box checked.

Also you can play around with the other settings to suit your needs.

You probably already know this . . . your Capture runs in real time. So if you have 30 minutes of video, your Capture will take 30 minutes.

After you have everything Captured, you rename your clips using Windows, or you can just drag 'em to the timeline and start editing.

Hello Hebby:

There are lots of Gurus on this forum. I'm not one of them so I don't know about the specifics of your camera, but here is what happens when I connect my camera which is also HDV.

From the main menu I choose
Project
Capture Video
HDV -----> choose OK

Then I see a capture window. At the top left of the window is a Preferences button. This is truncated so you can only see the letters "Pr" but if you click on it then it expands and you can see the entire word Preferences.

Before I hook-up my camera there is indeed a blue screen that says "Device Not Available."

Now that you have expanded the Preferences button, you should be able to see a small screen with a General and Device tab.

Choose the Device tab. You should see a Device Type of "IEEE 1394/MPEG2 TS Device." However the Device name below that should be blank if you have not turned on your camera yet.

So hookup your firewire and turn the camera on. Note that you must be in the Play/Edit mode (or whatever your camera calls it) so that the capture can work properly. In my case when I do this, the Device box displays the name of my camera which is Sony HDR HC-3.

If you are following these steps, in theory, your camera should be recognized. If you are able to capture DV then we know your firewire is good on both the camera and computer. But if it doesn't work using the above approach then maybe there is something special about your camera settings.

Take a look at your manual and see if there is anything special, and post back on the forum so people can see your issue. That way if someone knows about your specific camera then he/she can help.

Good luck!
