Importing images to overlay over video

Jon-W wrote on 3/21/2024, 9:30 AM

I am trying to import photos to lay over a video track below.

The photos are not the same aspect ratio as the main video and so it seems I cannot import them.

I just get the red 'no entry' circle and bar stopping me dragging and dropping.

The files do not show up when I try to import in Vegas Pro either.

Do I need to change the aspect ratio of one video track or something to allow me to import the images?

I just can't seem to find what I need to do to fix the problem so would really appreciate your help.

Thank you,

Jon

The aspect ratio of your images is not the cause.

However, aspect ratio is one thing you will deal with once the photos are on the timeline.

The red icon is telling you they are not in a format that Vegas accepts. To troubleshoot this, provide the complete MediaInfo details, so that someone can suggest a friendly format and app for conversion.

Also provide your Vegas version and build number.

Thank you, but they are just jpg images. Why would Vegas not accept them?

Have just converted one to a png and it has accepted that, so I have a work around, but am a bit confused. Thanks!

**EDIT** Now it won't accept the png files. Totally confused.

@Jon-W Do the MediaInfo that @mark-y asked for if you want to know.

The  App in the link above is called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

Hello thanks for this. I have Vegas 20.0 Build 411.

I have now converted files to png and it still won't accept them.

But it does accept the png files I made in gimp which are the same size as the video track.

I just don't get it!

Please help! Thank you.

JPEG images created using CMYK color space do not open in Vegas. RGB only.

Since you mentioned Gimp, something along those lines is highly suspect

Thanks Mark, but I don't really know what this means. The colour space for the png files is RGBA, so this doesn't work either? How do I change my files to have the correct colour space? The more I get into this editing business, the more my head wants to implode.

Mediainfo for @Jon-W displays "color space: YUV" even when the jpg is tagged as "sRGB". That is quite common; it is not necessary to embed an ICC for that tag. Mediainfo does not display the embedded "sRGB" tag. In @mark-y 's display, there is the YUV tag, but there is also "Colorspace_ICC:RGB", which is redundant when the sRGB tag is present.

Conclusion: mediainfo is not showing anything wrong.

Jon, if you are still curious, upload the actual source images to Drive or Dropbox, and post the link here.

If not, that's entirely ok, but for future reference, posting images to the forum is not helpful for troubleshooting purposes, because they will have been converted by upstream AWS servers, and all of their original metadata has been replaced.

Since you seem to have found a workaround, I'll bow out now and wish you good luck going forward with your project.

@Jon-W

While we're waiting, I was curious if the originals were scanned by you and saved in Gimp, or are they some you downloaded?

I have my own photo archiving and restoration business, I inherited a number of original prints from the early 1900s.
