importing mpeg2... but where did the audio go?

FarL wrote on 3/31/2004, 6:21 PM
I am importing VOB/mp2 files but when I do either of two problems occurs. One, it comes in only as video without audio or it just crashes and launches the error report.

I am new to Vegas so please excuse my ignorance but can some one please tell me how to import an mpeg2 with the audio on it?

You ripped off a commercial DVD, didn't you? :)

The AC3 audio can't be read by Vegas. You need to convert it to something else.

Thanks for the information!

hehe... ok you got me... but it is actually my own stuff ( i am owner and president of a reasonably well known adult media company called "Homegrown Video" and I am trying to take our dvds to web streams more conveniently)

PS. I apologize in advance to anyone on this board who is offended by the nature of what I do for a living. Please understand we are all unified by our love of video hardware and software...and I am not going to come on this board and fulfill any negative stereotypes or preconceptions many may have of my industry....

Thanks to all!

Denver Post had an interesting article about an accountant in this line of work. Actually kinda sounded like an interesting job.

Anyway, as has been pointed out, Vegas doesn't have an AC3 decoder, so it can't extract the audio from the mpeg. You can use DVD2AVI to extract the audio from the original VOB files however and then you can pull the WAV file into Vegas.

It would probley be better (and faster) if you encoded the video from DV though. It will also give you better results (i think) then encoding web video from DVD mpeg-2.

I would be happy to set you up with a user pass to our site (gratis) but i have a few issues....

1. Need some way to verify age...
2. Don't want to look like I am just coming in to spam this board
3. Don't want to upset other members of this community

If you would like to email me a suggestion on ways to overcome those issues then I am all ears... timlake AT homegrownvideo DOT com

I realize this would be better for quality and we are doing many this way but two issues arise that require considering the other arrangment... one, we wish to increase the number that we are doing and ripping from the dvd is seen as a time saving possibility... and, two, we are starting to get submissions sent in on dvds so we are similarly looking for convenience and speed with the least destruction to quality....

Oh... I thought you were taking DVD you put together from tape (DV or whatnot). :)

Goto www.dvdrhelp.com. I'm sure they have instructions on how to go straight from VOB to a usable file (mpeg-1, AVI, wmv, etc).

They've been a big help for me. :)

Click on these links. They will tell you what you need to know:

Hope that helps!

You're getting submissions on DVD?

Interesting to see how those are made.

I'm sure many of us on this board would be glad to help analyze the incoming video, cough cough, in the name of...research. Yep. Research. Cough.

Lucky punk...
