importing VOBs

hi,

I'm new to this forum, please forgive me if this topic has been run over a couple of times.

I compose music for film, and get the films on DVD. Somehow I need to convert the VOBs to .AVI, to have them playing in my audioprogram Nuendo on PC.
Sony clearly states that Vegas does NOT import VOBs.Too bad, but they have their reasons, I guess.

My question:

- is there a workaround for this in Vegas !?
- do I in fact need to buy yet another program to (batch)convert my films !? in this case, can you recommend any !?

the films are NOT copyprotected, as they come straight from Avid - I'm not infringing any copyrights. Quicktime playouts are not an option, as anybody working on PC may know, as they suck too much processing power :-)

Depending on the structure of the DVD, Vegas might be able to accept the VOB files on the timeline and show the video. However the editing experience is no fun due to very slow response with these files, and also if the audio is Dolby AC3 then Vegas can't accept it.

You could try downloading DVD2AVI which will convert the VOBs into a different format of video file that should be more palatable to Nuendo. It also produces a separate wav file for the audio track.

One tip if you do try DVD2AVI - the setting for YUV/RGB colourspace is crucial. Try it the other way if the first one doesn't work.

You can just copy the VOB on the HD, rename it with .mpg extension and put it in the timeline (you will still need DVD2avi to extract the sound track).

Yes, both solutions work and the one of DVD2AVI may be the best. Or you can try this:

1.For the video file - Open the VOB file with Vegas; PLEASE NOTE THAT depending on the VOB own structure, YOU MAY NEED TO CHECK "NO RESAMPLE" otherwise if you re-render the video, the result will be disapointing - it's going to "blink". PLEASE NOTE TOO THAT there will be no sound because Vegas is not able to open AC-3 files. Another way: you can also demux (de-multiplex) the VOB file with TMPGENC-Plus before dropping the result in Vegas. There is no loss of quality at all going from VOB to MPEG2 (demuxing).

2.For the AC-3 audio files: Open the same VOB with BeSweet - download it for free (link available at www.videohelp.com). It's a bit confusing to understand how BeSweet works at first, but believe me, it works. There you can go from VOB to WAV or MPEG2 to WAV, etc.. Then you can drop the WAV file in Vegas. If you experience a loss of sync., you can fix that by setting a new config. for BeSweet as you go from VOB to WAV or even with a freeware named Virtualdub. PLEASE understand that this time there is going to be a loss of quality when you go from VOB to WAV. It can be subtle, but there is a loss of quality for sure.

At last, but not the least: please hope you and the others understand that this tutorial is intented for non-copyrighted material (unless it's your own work).
