Importing Xvid / Divx .avi files

Patrick Reynolds wrote on 10/23/2006, 4:57 PM
I am trying to use files that have been rendered and compressed with xvid and/or divx. Whenever I try to load these into VMS the audio shows up but not the video.

I am looking for a solution that does not require me to re-render, decompress, or in any way alter the file; all of these things creates to lardge a potential quality loos, and/or takes up too much spae on my hard drives. Any help will be greatly apprecciated. Thanks you

Have you installed the Xvid and DivX codecs on the computer you're using for Vegas Studio?

Vegas is going to re-render, decompress and recompress any Xvid/Divx video you use in your project when you render to a new output file. Of course, if you can use those files directly on the timeline as is you'll only have the one final recompression step instead of introducing another one just to be able to use the files.

I have had the same problem and it is not worth the effort to try to get VMS to work with a Divx or Xvid file. It is much easire to strip out the compression and work with a raw file.

Get VirtualDub, open the file with it, and then make an AVI file. In it's default function it will decompress the file and remove all compression. Be careful because a 200 MB Divx or Xvid compressed file could be up to 10 to 20 GB, but they do run fine.

VMS can't even use XviDs it's created itself! It looks like reformatting's the way to go.

Using the ffdshow Codec I have been able to successfully inset divx clips

I tried ffdshow and it didn't work - uninstalled XviD and I can now see audio and video on the timeline. Problem is, I can no longer encode in XviD. The XviD installer gives the option of not using the decoder, but that doesn't work (not decoding XviD isn't an option).

Kinda makes me wonder what else some folks may be doing when they have these problems. I downloaded and installed the stock DivX and Xvid players with codecs. After that i'm now able to open any DivX/Xvid file i've ever received and i'm able to render to them as well.

It looks like some codecs work and others don't. I've just tried Xvid;-)2.2 and it's fine!

I am not sure which option I turned on in ffshow codec to get it work with VMS. I went in to both the VFW CODEC configuration and video decoder configuration enabed the Xvid decoder for Divx type streams. After I did that I can watch Divx files in both VMS and WMP. I did not download any other divx/xvid players/codecs.

As I've said in my posts in the Vegas forum, Vegas does not understand the FourCC code that the latest versions of DivX place in the header of the AVI file. Use any FourCC changer to modify the 'DV50' code to 'DIVX' and Vegas will understand your DivX clips and show the video stream.

Unfortunately, Vegas 7.0b (not sure about Vegas Movie Studio) is terrible in processing these DivX clips. Previews run at about 1 frame a second and rendering is just as slow. I have recieved no answer from Sony or DivX Networks why this is the case. No one seems to care.
