improving processor performance

I'm using a laptop that I figured would be great for HD editing:
The Sony Vaio VPCF13AFX
While the processor speed is 1.73, it boasts a turbo boost to 2.93 when it's needed. When I'm using digital juice templates or using any more than 2 video clips in a time line, the thing just chugs. And the turbo is definitely needed, but is nowhere to be found.
Does anyone have advice on how to kick up the performance. The laptop wasn't cheap and I guess I expected more.
Thanks,...Michael

Usually, "turbo" modes are toggled on within the BIOS. My motherboard's BIOS, for instance, also displays a warning if such a mode is selected; sometimes it can lead to instability.

Hope this helps.

Even high end laptops usually have very slow hard drives...You may be able to replace with a hybrid solid state and hard drive cross, that fits in laptop, and runs more like a desktop hard drive ( 7200 rpm or faster)

If I'm reading your post correctly you are stating that even when the processor is loaded it's remaining at 1.73GHz and not "turboing" up to 2.9GHz?

If that is the case I would first suggest you check the CPU speed during timeline playback to make sure it's not actually at the turbo speed. An easy way to do this is to download Realtemp and see what your processor speed you are running during various application examples. http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ You can run Realtemp from the exe file so you don't have to install ANYTHING.

If your processor is not going to turbo during loading I would see if perhaps it's okay when plugged in but not when unplugged. If that is the case see if there is a power management setting that is preventing turbo mode during battery operation.

If it never goes turbo then I would have a look at the BIOS. I can't give you advice there without actually seeing your specific BIOS.
