Inconsistant rendering

I have a bunch of png files that sit over an uncompressed AVI file. When I render (to any format) I sometimes get just black, or I get just the PNG files or I get everything correctly (but not very often). This is quite a new installation of Movie Studio on a new machine, so just wondering if there are some obvious settings I'm missing.

It seems okay if I render the whole project, but fails when rendering a region - I always have to start the render, cancel and then start again. It renders any FX for the overall project in the first render, but not any timeline content.
