Inconsistent Vegas 9 Subfolder Names

I have noticed that Vegas "seems" inconsistent in the way it creates and names subfolders under the project folder. I have some folders named "Rendered Media" and other folders named "Renders" and it isn't clear (or at least I haven't found any explanation) as to what these folders are used for and why they have different names.

Any ideas or is this just a small programming bug?

The "Rendered Media" folder is intended for storing files that you have rendered and incorporated into your project, such as rendering to a new track or saving a snapshot from the preview window. In general, deleting files from this folder is bad because they would be missing from your project.

The "Renders" folder is for storing files you have rendered using Project -> Render As. You could probably delete these files without affecting your project. You could 'recover' them by re-rendering your project to the same format (assuming you didn't change your project in the interim).

OK, got it. I don't remember this behavior in Vegas 8 so I assume it's new for Vegas 9.

Thanks.

You are correct, this improved file organization is new behavior in Vegas Movie Studio 9. By default the application will keep your various files under your project's folder (except for imported media files where you've navigated to a different folder to drop them into your project or if you've intentionally changed a folder path such as Recordings).

Here's a more complete list of subfolders that may exist in your project:

Media (for captures and imports) - DV and HD captures, CD extracted files, AVCHD imports, DVD camcorder imports, memory recording unit imports, get photo (Twain).

Rendered Media (for files rendered from within the project that become part of the project) – Mix to new track, new takes (for apply non-real time FX), video preview window snapshots.

Renders – Files rendered from Render As and Make Movie Wizard renders to your hard drive.

Recordings – Default folder for recordings made within the project. Can be changed in Project Properties.

Prerenders – Default folder for prerendered video. Can be changed in Project Properties.

Generated Music – Default folder for Cinescore created music (VMS 9.0a and higher).
