Increasing capture resolution for Sony DV on XP

Howdy!
I am using windows xp. I cannot seem to increase the quality of the video capture from my sony trv-20 from 320x240. How do I go about doing this? The capture properties are from microsoft's Camcorder Properties dialog and everything in this dialog is greyed out.

It sounds to me like you're not using the DV Camera or VCR option. Are
you using SF's VidCap software? A DV capture should always be 720x480
and you shouldn't even have the option to change it. It almost seems
like you're trying to do an analog capture instead of DV.

You are right. In the bottom corner of the screen it says that the file is 720x480. I guess my addition question is why is the video playing at such a poor resolution when I play the avi file that is generated when running Windows Media Player?

Ahhhhh. ok .... Sonic Foundry once posted in here that there was a slight
incompatibility between their DV .avi files and Media Player, which would
cause MP to display them at half resolution. The files should still be the
full 720x480 and should play fine in any other player.

Start VideoFactory, click on the explorer tab, and then click on the .avi
file you captured. At the bottom of the explorer window will be shown
information about the file, including it's resolution. Does it show you the
correct size there?

I'm glad I read this thread. Why the files appear half size in WMP has always mystified me.

Exactly right. In VideoFactory the file properties are being shown as 720x480. An interesting side is that I also tried to play the file in ATI's file player and it did the same 1/2 resolution thing as Windows Media Player. Interesting..
