Indexing Service

Over serveral years, I've painstakingly encoded and transferred nearly 50,000 songs, sound effects, etc. to a 300 Gig hard drive.

When dealing with drives containing large numbers of files, is Windows' Indexing Service a good or bad thing?

I've always understood that when editing video, it's a good idea to turn this function off, in that it consumes both time and resources.

On or off...which is best?

OFF. The Windows Indexing Service is only used by the right-click / Search option in the windows file explorer which isn't that great at finding stuff anyway. It's consumption of resources and accessing of disks to update its index when you least want it to, far outweighs any benefits it provides. I always turn it off.
