"Now, we see fewer and fewer artists being developed. By far and deep. You'll never again see another Eric Clapton, Garth Brooks, Dave Mathews, Rolling Stones, Kiss, or any other long-life band. Because it's all about one-album profit and then dump em. Because there is no longer a fund that can support a weak record to hold over to the next record."

So true and sad!

There have been countless threads on this pirate topic, on the web and the funny thing is, you can allways see where in the foodchain the posters are.

If I were in the situation of trying to get my material exposed to the world, I would welcome any downloading of it (I know because I've witnessed it), in the hope for it to spread around.
Then after years of frustration and eating canned food, I´d get recognized.
I'd hate everyone who refuses to pay for my work (and even use the ever so lame argument "nobody is holding a gun to your head").

If I only could find General Motors' response to Bill Gates, I'd post it here.
To take arguments about stealing cars and other materials and think they apply here is strange. Merchantdise of the mind, like music and software is not of the same nature as; steel, food and energy, needed to make the world go round. Though marketing experts would like us to belive otherwise. Who in their right minds value a baseball/basketball/football player, over a soldier, for instance (It would be nice if the world did not need soldiers).

I firmly belive that to make more record sales, the quality standard has to be raised. On that note; It is interesting to see a competition like IDOL, a competition where the record buying public is a factor. You can see many very talented people get rejected and stereotypes get advanced. A talent like Kelly Clarkson, deserved to win but the record that was released under her name is'nt worth crap
I only hope that the Fantasia record wont get botched like that.

No matter how hard the Britney's of this world have worked, they'll never be more than a Susuki.
Dylan and Clapton are Lincoln's.

Would that make Van Morrison and Marvin Gaye "cadillacs"? :)

Now take Van for instance. He gave you so much more for your dollar. Rock, jazz, folk, soul. The man definitely was talented. Moondance was just a phenominal collection of incredible works. I started to write a script a few years ago titled "Into The Mystic" Classic artist.

Good to see a few really getting to the core of the issue. I truly beieve a large part of the music theft is done simply because people can, not because they want it or will ever listen to it.
Bob.

That is my feeling to.

My wife's kid brother, is a typical youngster 16 year old. He got a new PC when he was 14 years old. It took him only few months to make a mess of that machine. I know because when we visit them I sometimes borrow that machine to read my mail. A 1.2 Ghz PC unusable for even to open your Email. They gave up on that machine and bought him a new one few months back; 2.6 Ghz Intel machine, 512mb and 120 Gigabyte HDD.
Guess what!! That 120 Gigabyte machine is now filled with 118 gigabytes of useless crap. And that 2.6 Ghz 512 Mb machine takes now takes 10-15 minutes to open up a friggin web browser. I offered to optimise that machine for them so I wanted to defrag the harddrive. I could'nt. I have never seen a drive so fragmented. IT WAS ALL RED. And Windows refused to defrag!!
This kid is not a thief, he spends all his pocket money on DVD movies, CD's, PC games and Playstation games. He uploads most of this into his PC and fills his HardDrive, not because it is needed but because it can be done, rendering his PC useless.
His generation is mostly like this and if you try to convince them othervise they shrug their sholders and go and buy yet another movie or the new........ 50 cent CD.

As far as I can see, this kid and others I know have put enough money on entertainment, Computers and PC components.

In fact their whole lives revolve around the entertainment industry. It's hard to find a kid, these day's that has not been in FEW bands before they are 15. Or kid's that dont spend their free time in front of some screen.

Getting paid over and over again for just one performance is a luxuary Mozart and Shakespear didn't have.

When Mozart went to the Cistine chappel and copied on to paper Allegry's famouse work, now we read the story in schools as a miracle of art. Are you saying Mozart was a thief? The morallity is not all the way Spot sees it. Art is more than a basis for 21st century material greed.

you're welcome to disagree of course, but the facts and numbers and trends are not only on my side, they are TOTALLY on my side.
KISS is one of the most developed bands in the history of the world. They have sold more albums than most any band in the world. Whether you like their music or not, the A&R teams at the label developed them. Artist dev is relegated to what the artist does on his/her own now.
Dave Mathews. I can't stand the music, and he's not a nice person in person, but he is one of the last "developed artists."
