You are doing it the wrong way for what you want I think.
The way you do it is meant to add a text event as an new event on the timeline.
If you want to place a text event above another event you have to use the option in the window "Media Generator".

@scott-newman . . or this?:

scott-newman wrote on 12/14/2019, 2:24 PM

Yes, either is what I am looking for. Text I can colorize the background and move around easily.  I still can't quite get it.
Media Generator > FX: Titles & Text > (Sample Text Default) > Advanced > Background.
Should I be choosing a different option from the Titles & Text Preset?  I don't want things like action flips and bounces?

j-v wrote on 12/14/2019, 3:27 PM

If you choose the default one you can do all in and with that text pop-up
Look for a little bit:

j-v, thank you so much for the screen capture. I can do all of that if I keep my background transparent. The thing that I am trying to do is in the original pictures you sent me. Attached is a picture of what happens to me. When I try to set the background color, the entire screen turns the color, not just the rectangle behind the text.

scott-newman wrote on 12/14/2019, 4:35 PM

ok, I think I've got it now. I have to change the frame size at the very top of the window.

scott-newman wrote on 12/14/2019, 4:37 PM

Moving the blue frame around, then takes use of the cropping/moving tool. Lots of steps. I still would like a feature that I type some text, change the color of the background and opacity and move it around easily. Or, am I still missing something?

j-v wrote on 12/14/2019, 4:48 PM

I don't know because I never use that option for a simple text. I think I cannot further help you, sorry.

Pro Titler has this feature and is much easier than trying to crop. You do have some limitations on the sizing (you have to use spaces if you want it bigger than the text). but it is treated as one graphic object.

j-v wrote on 12/14/2019, 5:20 PM

For coloring the backgrond of a text pop-up I usual used a lower third you can buy as an external script, but mostly I use saved ones made with Pan/Crop and Motion Track with a bit shadow.

@scott-newman - Not gonna happen. NewBlue TitlerPro7 does ALL this, and much more. Please understand this, as long as there are 3rd Party software warehouses willing to offer the things we/you want, then why would’ve SONY and now MAGIX spend time and money on making this is a natively available in-house offer? Why?

Or, am I still missing something?

@scott-newman - You’ve been given several “alternatives” to meet your actual outcome. What won’t be satisfied will be your request to make this simpler. So no, you’re not missing anything, but having this implemented by MAGIX, as something simpler, you are 😉!

How long will Protype title be part of Vegas? It moved already to the deprecated features. Magix could add such additional features to the existing Title&Text. A possibility to add different colours to the text or a simple background could be one of them.

@3POINT - Exactly!

Magix could add such additional features to the existing Title&Text.

@3POINT - Yah fink? I don’t.

A possibility to add different colours to the text or a simple background could be one of them.

@3POINT - Nuh-hah....😏

Magix plans on building on the current titler in future updates, so protype is about to become obsolete. That is why is has been deprecated. Many ProType features are already in the current titler.

I imagine your suggestion is part of those planned upgrades.

The text system hasn't seen much of an update in a very long time, but that doesn't mean the update isn't on the radar. They had more important things to get to first.

@fr0sty - Yeah, I guess so. What would be at the top of your list?

fr0sty wrote on 12/15/2019, 5:11 PM

Getting GPU accel up and running was important (meaning decode and everything, not just timeline and encode), and they still have to get it going for AMD.

Getting Vegas Post out there was important, it has DRAMATICALLY expanded VP's capabilities and, as far as I can tell, runs rock solid for the most part. I actually prefer it to After Effects now, it has far more features stock and is easier to use in some cases. In order to make AE do what VE does out of the box, I'd have to buy thousands of dollars worth of plugins (trapcode form, trapcode particular, boris lens flare effects, to name a few).

Getting HDR up and running, not just as good, but better than the competition, was important for them to prepare for its inevitable takeover of the TV market.

Getting many of the dozens upon dozens of bugs they've squashed taken care of, and implementing the various performance improvements we've seen, was huge. Still work to go, but when I go back to older versions and try to edit my modern media, I get reminded real fast of how far we've come.

This update, for the most part, finished the "modernizing" of Vegas, aside from adding some new text features, so I would imagine that 18 would end up showing some love to our beloved, but aging, titler system in VP.

@fr0sty - As we leave 2019 behind us, I can’t tell you how much I applaud your honest reflections on just what has been achieved thus far. I’ve been with the ”Program” since 2002 and can count the scars! And yes, we have come a long way. Seeing their, MAGIX, pursuing our Postee’s wishes (the background Text Colour) to be augmented to be done in what is possibly a moribund function, would be painting lipstick on a porcine. So, again, what do you feel still needs to be cured? As a Moderator, and having read the frustrations of other Users here, what do you see as being the issues that have percolated to the top?

fr0sty wrote on 12/15/2019, 11:10 PM

The elephant in the room... stability and performance. Gains have been made, but there's always someone experiencing some issues. RAW format support. The text editor getting some love, VST3 support (which along with it opens up the possibility of turning Vegas into an instrument, since Reason has made its entire rack available via VST3), a few UI tweaks and customization options to quiet a few extremely squeaky wheels out there... but for the most part, feature-wise, vegas is where it needs to be. If they just focus on tightening up the engine that runs it all beneath the hood, and continue to refine what is already there, I think they'll be in a good spot in the years to come.
