Instability arrives with new hardware...Ideas?

Hello all,

I recently added some new hardware to my system and fully
restaged it after a hardrive failure...Now it's about as
stable with Vegas 1.0b as Robert Downy Jr. alone in a
Beverly Hills hotel room...

1.0b had been usably stable with the prior config, though
not as "bullet-proof" as I'd expect. I usually rebooted 1-
2 times an hour due to Vegas crashes.

Here's the new system setup:

-Tyan Trinity 400 MB (w/VIA 133A chipset).
-256 MEG Micron CAS2 RAM
-PIII 733Cu
-1x Maxtor ATA-100 20gig as primary IDE master (running at
ATA66).
-2x Maxtor ATA-100 20gigs in removable IDE bays on
Promise/Maxtor ATA/100 PCI controller
-1x CDR as secondary IDE Master
-1x CDRW as primary IDE Slave
-ISA 56k USR Modem
-ATI Rage II AGP video
-MOTU PCI324 - 1224 Audio Interface
-MOTU MTP AV on LPT1

Basically...Since the restage, I'm running W98SE with all
critical updates, all recent audio and video
drivers...Except the Tyan VIA 4-in-1 drivers just out.

The performance off the ATA/100 drives over the Promise
card is worse than off of the ATA/66 over primary IDE
interface in the prior config. The system locks, crashes,
throws kernel32 and vegas.dll errors constantly and/or
reboots itself when playing larger 24bit EDL's in Vegas.
Especially when jumping from place-to-place in an EDL with
the cursor.

A few questions:

1) Does anyone use a Promise ATA100 controller successfully
with Vegas?
2) Does anyone have problems with the recently updated MOTU
324 driver (as compared to the older driver) and Vegas.
3) Has anyone found specific problems with Vegas/MOTU and a
VIA chipset?

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THIS WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF PARTS
RUNS SO POORLY???

By all accounts, I've *upgraded* the computer from its
prior config...And it performs worse.

I've tried all of the obvious fixes...Reinstalls, etc.

Thanks in advance for an helpful info.

David
