Instagram video

Kaner wrote on 10/12/2016, 6:45 AM

Hello,

I'm trying to render a video for instagram in the sony avc mp4 format with 29fps (NTSC) but, unfortunately, Instagram does not like it and it throws a message "incompatible video".

So I use another 3rd party program to export the mp4 video to avi, and then from avi to mp4 again. This mp4 video re-reconverted is liked by Instagram and it works...

Where is the sense of this? Does anyone can tell the settings to render a video for instagram?

Thank you for answering! 😊

PS: I use sony vegas 10

I thought the problem was from SonyAVC (Using Vegas Pro 13), but after I tried, it works ok.

However, the quality of upload may vary to different phones. When I upload my video from my older Lenovo S920 (Android OS), the playback of video is not smooth. Very bad. But after I use Meizu M2 Note (Android OS), the result is great.

What phone did you use?

Thank You Set for your answer,

I tried Mainconcept but it looks so bad, maybe I didn't set the settings properly, I will try it again.

Anyway I can't use any template because I want to set a custom resolution of 1080 (width) and 1920 (height), it is like a rotated HD, I want this for the stories of instagram, not for the main profile, so I have to edit this setting.

My phone is a samsung s6 edge

Ah, I see... I haven't experiment with that feature... so looks like the video is 'locked' to portrait mode ?

Looks like I need to try that too...

May I know your IG account?

Update: I just experiment with story, only use the 1280x720 material (so the video is enlarged and crop to portrait mode). The source is MP4 rendered with SonyAVC, at 16Mbps (default SonyAVC Internet 720p settings).

Wish I know how to share the IG story link... but, probably need to follow my IG first... search 'set_chung'

I've seen your stories and I don't want my vids get cropped but make the vid on purpose exactly with that format

update: maybe when you change the templates to set the resolution the render is not valid for IG

set wrote on 10/12/2016, 9:09 AM

Yep - even the enlarged-quality goes very bad... low-res alike... I don't want like that too...

Let me try experiment with this🛠

UPDATE1 : VegasPro13 SonyAVC cannot render the 1080x1920 settings... - My only choice is Mainconcept - try with 1080x1920 8Mbps settings.

Looks like IG Story's per slide video is limited ONLY to 10 seconds.... So, as previously mentioned, I only able to use Mainconcept AVC for this - 1080x1920 8Mbps 30p settings (but I'm sure 25p also work), and it is available only for 24 hours on my IG account: 'set_chung'. For me, the quality is good - but need other viewer's opinion... I only use photograph taken by my Meizu M2 Note phone, and make pan&scan motion from it.

Enjoy the 'Nasi Goreng' picture in my story! 😁🍚😅

IG video is 640x640 (after they re-encode it) isn't it? If so, might be simpler to do the resizing locally and upload that resolution.

This is the new feature of IG, Nick...: Instagram Stories. (CNET review) - following Snapchat's feature. Only viewable from phone... (admit it that just tried it yesterday - so that food picture is my first one 😄)

Update: Use this Chrome extension to view IG Stories directly from Desktop Chrome browser. Then, just browse to Instagram's site.

The Instagram has changed a lot lately, from Square only video/photo - now you can post Non-Square one (Can post very wide landscape orientation of photo / video - but in portrait mode, it is more limited). Also for video, duration is no longer 15 seconds - now 1 minute max.

Our video can be downloaded to local device (in case you are filming directly from IG Story feature - and want to save it). Just analyzed with MediaInfo:

I had something similar with GoPro and Sony ActionCam video.  The video from the camera is mp4.  When I tried to render it to mp4 it either didn't work or looked bad.  Both GoPro and Sony offer compatible software that converts the mp4 to .AVI for editing in NLE like Vegas.

I compared it to compressing, a compressed backup file from QuickBooks.  QuickBooks compresses the back up file.  If you then use a backup utility, it compresses the file agian, the result is a useless  backup of QB. There is no way to uncompress and a read the backup becasue it was compressed twice.

In Vegas, it's the same theory, you are tyring to compress a video already compressed.  Conversation to .AVI solves the problem because .AVI is uncompressed.  Does that make sense?

.AVI is a container format, like .MOV or .MP4 or .MXF etc.. The video within it can be uncompressed but is not necessarily. In the case of GoPro, the software they offer will convert it to the Cineform codec, which is near-lossless and edit-friendly but it still has intra-frame compression. It's definitely not uncompressed. Uncompressed files are enormous.

I wished VP had stronger Social Media features, such as direct upload to Instagram or Facebook accounts. This could give VP the upper hand to some other NLE's.

Insta is notoriously tricky to upload to, and my latest tests also show the drastic quality loss (i used avc nvenc) sadly.

Perhaps there's a way to share some Custom Output Presets that work ok?

Based on my experience, the portrait resolution is 720x900.

(864x1080)

And I used that template to create these (since I also upload to Youtube for archival purpose - I set the project to 864x1080)

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bf_MNYSj_qo/

https://www.instagram.com/p/BgftxaglM6a/

And customize the rendering template to that resolution, and give bitrate of 4Mbps.

If square resolution is needed, I left it 1080x1080 ( https://www.instagram.com/p/Bfuv3jGDQ6T/ )

this seems an interesting starting point..

http://www.premieregal.com/blog/2017/1/26/instagram-video-formats-export-settings-for-premiere-pro

obviously Insta doesn't adhere to standard TV aspect ratios; any deviation I suspect will end up in (unwanted) recompression. Will have to investigate 1800x945 vs 1080x...

/edit: Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Portrait or Square; Landscape (1.91:1) seems the closest to my native 16:9 (1.77:1) which I would prefer..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)

This looks to me as the original source of "laws of engagement":

Where "Instagram Feed" & "Instagram Stories" are the items of interest.

Guiding steps to the world domination are also outlined here:

To obtain the sacred knowledge about Instagram Stories be advised to select the "Instagram Stories" in drop-down menu right underneath the "Choose your ad placement" line.

Correct... in the past I also cannot accept portrait video too, but after hearing a friend who expert in marketing showing this, the reason of doing portrait..., now I finally understand why you will need to use that 9:16 or 4:5 aspect ratio.

In the past, video are limited to the little box called TV, and television has only one aspect ratio: 4:3... then arrive the film cinema and all innovations around it, and finally able to have a standard 2.35:1

After years too, TV has innovation to Widescreen format of 16:9...

But then, the arrival of internet, social media, instagram, etc..., actually we are not restricted any further with those aspect ratio..., you have more freedom of selecting the best aspect ratio that suits your need.

Has there been any inroads of better editing for Instagram? 1:1 aspect ratio..dedicated export options, etc?
