Install on Multiple PCs - Problem

Leigh wrote on 8/31/2008, 9:13 AM
I'm trying to install Sony Vegas 8.0 Pro on my new laptop. I already have it activated on my desktop.

I installed it on my Laptop and, when prompted, entered my 8.0 serial, followed by my 6.0 serial (I upgraded). I then filled out my registration details (name and address). Why do I need to supply these details again? I've already registered the software via my desktop!

When I attempt to submit my details to register online, I get an error message back that states:

"Unlocking Serial Not Qualified".

I did a search for this error but found nothing.

What does this mean? Why can't I activate the software on my laptop?

Thanks

Hi Leigh

This is strange. I only had to put in my Ver. 8 s/n - I upgraded too, but from ver. 7.

HI Ulf.

The whole process worked fine when I originally installed Vegas 8.0 Pro on my desktop, so I don't know what's going on here. It's really frustrating.

Have you tried just entering your V8 serial number?
I've never needed to add any older version serial numbers...
Leigh wrote on 8/31/2008, 1:28 PM
I initially enter the V8 serial number, and it then prompts me for the serial number from the version I am upgrading from (in my case V6).

Maybe I should raise a support ticket with Sony...

I've done many upgrades. The only time i've ever been asked for the previous serial number is when purchasing the upgrade. I've never had to enter it when installing.

This is all very strange then; especially as it's all working perfectly on my desktop (and has been since January this year).

I just tried re-registering the software, via the website, using the machine ID of my laptop, and I received the same error message. I've contacted Sony regarding the error. I'll let you knwo what they have to say...

Where did you purchase the upgrade? Was it directly from Sony or from some other 3rd party? It occurs to me that if you purchase an upgrade from a 3rd party then they have no way of verifying your current version's serial number at the time of purchase. This might be the reason why some folks are asked for it during installation.
Leigh wrote on 8/31/2008, 2:05 PM
It was purchased from a third party, and not from Sony directly.

FYI, this is the form I'm presented with after supplying my Vegas Pro 8.0 serial:

Both of my serials are accepted (and both are registered with Sony).

You might check out the information on this page from SCS: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/reg/faq

Sony states:

What is an activation or authentication code?
An activation or authentication code is used to fully enable your Sony Creative
Software product. Your activation or authentication code is generated using your serial number, which always remains the same, and your unique Computer or Machine ID.

Serial number + Computer/Machine ID = Activation/Authentication Code

When do I need a new activation or authentication code?
You will need to obtain a new activation or authentication code if you install a new version of the Windows Operating System, change the lettering of your hard drives, adding or removing hardware, install the application on a new computer, or reinstall Windows after a system crash.

According to the end user software license agreement, you can only install it on one computer.

@Mustafa

I believe that it what I am trying to do - Request a new activation.

What about this knowledgebase article:

"1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Sony hereby grants you a limited, non-exclusive license to use the Software on one (1) computer at a time upon the terms and conditions set forth in this Agreement."

Sony has always permitted installing Vegas on more than one computer, but you may only *use* it on one at a time. I haven't installed V8 yet, but I have always installed the first copy on my editing computer and again on my laptop for when I am on the road.

To the OP - When you upgrade, you use the earlier version serial number to validate the upgrade. When you download the newer version, you will also get a new serial number. Once you have used the old number to upgrade, it can't be used again.

As an earlier poster said, check your serial numbers on the Sony site.

Hi Steve.

I've checked my serial numbers. In fact, I cut and pasted them directly from the "My Software" page.

So the problem is caused by the fact that I've upgraded, and I've already used my Vegas 6 serial during the initial install of Vegas Pro 8?

I'm afraid at this point you're out of the realm of helpful user experience. This is an issue between Sony's licensing scheme and how they support 3rd party upgrades. You'll have to call either curvenet or Sony's customer support to get it straightened out.

I suspect most of us get our upgrades directly from Sony so we've never encountered this.

Cheers. I've raised a support ticket with Sony. No response as of yet...

It's a holiday here in the USA. They'll get back to you tomorrow.

Ah. I didn't realise. Thanks

Hello Leigh, et al.,
it is perfectly legal to place the program on more than one computer - in spite of any user license, why would they include "network render" as a function to speed up finalizing a video? The "supporting computers" have to be activated, and then the "supported computer" activates the network rendering on the other machines. . .

Until that time. . . Earl J.

Hi,

maybe V6 needs to be installed at first? I mean, the V8 setup routine might need the presence of the old version in order to validate the serial number. Just a thought...

Cheers

Doesn't the license allow you to have three installations at any one time? I think strictly speaking you can only edit on one machine at a time, but you can render on two others at the same time. But as it was mentioned above, I think the clause is there for network rendering.

The boxed v8 upgrade I have requires the earlier version to actually be installed on the computer (I tried the method of just feeding it the old serial number, but I didn't work, I think the install is searching the registry). Perhaps you had v6 already installed on the desktop which is why that install went OK.

Having said that, your situation is different from my experience, because I couldn't even install v8 without having v6 already installed.

Hello to you all,
I had to change computer in order to handle HD video. I have reinstalled Vegas 8 Pro on my new computer.
The software has already been registerred with Sony from my old computer.
How can I reactivate?
27 days to go only.
