Installation fails, can't re-install old version

My installation of Vegas 8.0c resulted in the following error message: "The Installation Wizard has ended prematurely! Your system has not been modified..." Vegas launched okay, but it couldn't preview any DV files. I uninstalled 8.0c and tried to install 8.0b, and got the same error message.

I tried to repair the installation by double-clicking on "vegas80_enu.msi" in the "Sony Setup" folder, but it reported, "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run."

I ran into the same problem with DVD Architect 5.0. In that instance, I corresponded with Sony technical support, exchanging 15 messages over a course of more than a week, and got nowhere. I then spent about an hour on the phone with Sony, trying all sorts of things, to no avail. Their final suggestion was to first uninstall all Sony software on my system (and I have lots of it), and then re-install DVDA.

Before I try that (which I fear will be another exercise in futility), I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this issue. In the DVDA situation, I was able to re-install version 4.5 without problem, but something appears to have changed with the installation of Vegas 8.0c. Any ideas would be appreciated.
