Instructions for setting up CD Architect in Windows XP with a newer SCSI burner and ADAPTEC SCSI host adapter.
1. Install the Adaptec ASPI layer v4.60 for Windows NT/2k. Do this even though MS and Adaptec say you don’t need the ASPI installed in XP.
2. Install SoundForge 4.5e (329) {4.5f should work also}, then CD Architect 4.0g.
3. With Explorer find the Forge32.exe in the SoundForge installation folder, right click on the file and select the Properties Page. Under Compatibility Mode set the properties to Win98/ME and then apply/ok this and exit.
4. Run both SoundForge and CD Architect. In CD Architect select <Options> <Select Drive> <Advanced>. Set the DRIVE TYPE to SCSI MMC Compatible. Set the HOST to your SCSI adapter e.g. 0.aic78u2. Set the SCSI CD-R to the name of your burner e.g 3.(5) Plextor CD-R PX-W1210S. Note the description of the model of the burner and write it down precisely. In this example you write down PX-W1210S. Shut down both Sonic Foundry applications.
5. Using a Hex Editor open the file scsimmc.cdd (in the SoundForge installation folder), and run an ASCII text search on the burner manufacturer. In this case you would run a search for Plextor. The cursor will stop at the first Plextor drive reference found. Carefully edit the drive model number after the Plextor ASCII reference CD-R, to read PX-W1210S. In other words you exchange the drive reference embedded in the file for the model number of your burner. Now save the file and exit the editor. Do not make any other changes to the file.
6. Open up SoundForge and CD Architect. When you now go to <Options> <Select Drive> your SCSI burner should be recognized immediately.
7. Result. You have CD Architect running under XP with your newer burners showing in the drive select options box. This will not work on all CDRs but will most likely work on the popular Plextor, Yamaha, Sony, Ricoh brands. This has been tested by other folks and it will work so long as Sonic Foundry have embedded the relevant link code for the burner manufacturers in the cdd files. This is why you can get CD Architect to work with newer burners using the <Select Drive> <Advanced> MMC routine which is well documented. The difference here is that the drive will show up as immediately recognized just like the good old days before the marketing shit hit the development fan in Sonic Foundry.
IF YOU CANNOT GET YOUR BURNER TO SHOW USING THE <SELECT DRIVE> <ADVANCED OPTIONS> MMC TRICK, THEN WHAT I AM WRITING HERE PROBABLY WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU. SORRY!
For ATAPI burners you need to edit the atapimmc.cdd file. You may also need to make one other change. You have to try and see.
Using Regedit open the Windows registry and go to: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Aspi.
Click on the ‘Parameters’ folder. On the right of the screen you will see ‘ExcludeMiniports’. Double click on it. An edit dialogue box appears and under the heading ‘ValueData’ there will be a command box below it. If the word ATAPI appears in the command box, delete it and immediately exit Regedit. Don’t make any other changes.
I have to assume you are comfortable with editing system files. This a “what you need to do” guide not a “how to do it for dummies”. You do the editing at your own risk but you can minimize risk by making backups before you proceed. Good luck!
