iPad2 Video Format/Size?

Greetings Brilliant Minds...

I am buying an iPad2 to show videos to clients when I meet with them off-site. I know the screen resolution of the iPad2 is 1024x768, but I don't know what format, size, options to choose when rendering a video out of Vegas 10?

I am shooting/editing 1080i AVCHD natively on the Vegas timeline, and would like to maintain the HD quality, but minimize the file size.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Dave

Understand that the iPad screen is 4:3, so widescreen will play letterboxed. You can always crop your video if you don't like this.

Handbrake has an excellent iPad preset. You may want to play with it, then adapt the settings to Vegas (Mainconcept AVC 2-pass) if you wish.

Thanks, musicvid... I got handbrake and am playing with it, but I don't understand your last sentence. Can you or others clarify?

If you are going to adapt the Handbrake settings to Vegas, use the Mainconcept AVC encoder with 2-pass VBR.

If you are going to use Handbrake, you may ignore that advice.

Render 1024x576, which has a nice modulus of 16. If it's for offline use then you don't need to be too keen to minimise the file size, do you? If you're going bitrate-based then I would try 1500 kbps at first.

I have a lengthy procedure that produces a result similar to Handbrake. If I was using that then I would probably start with Constant Quality crf 18.0 (which is actually higher quality than 20.0).

The required bit rate/crf value depends on the amount of movement and detail in the video. More movement / detail requires a higher bitrate / lower crf.
