Is a frequent reboot suggested on large projects?

Im working on a fairly large project using multi-cam with 4 video and 3 stereo tracks and a little of everything; deshaker on clips, color corrector, sharpen, envelopes, etc.

I save as often as I can remember to.

Should I consider it a given to re-boot the machine every 30 minutes or so to clear out the cache and freshen up 8.0c?

It has not been bad with freezes, and the restore is only forgets the last 3 clips I have worked on usually, but the project is getting longer and I have a deadline.

So, Im just wondering, do many people reboot or maybe just restart 8.0c every so often on big projects?.

Just about never. I've got a couple Vegas sessions open on my desktop that have been running continuously for maybe 4 or 5 months.

Thanks for the info.

FYI, I turn my Vegas machine off even if Im not gonna use it for a few hours.

I've been through voluminous debates on the 'leave it on vs. turn it off' topic over the years. Pretty much the bottom line is that both sides contain a pretty much equal amount of pros and cons. About the only meaningful reason to turn them off is energy conservation. About the only meaningful reason to leave them on is convenience. Personally i leaned towards the side of convenience. When i get into my studio i press the monitor power buttons and the shift key, and less than 2 seconds later i'm ready to get to work, all the projects and files i've been working on still open right where i left them.

I agree with your debate results.

My Vegas machine is also a heater. Could be good for the winter, but it's bad for the summer.

I used to be water cooled, which is an accident or over-heat waiting to happen, and a good reason to turn it off, but I went back to air on the last CPU.

I just checked and the project directory is up to 90 GB so far. That's not really a big project, and it shouldn't even matter to Vegas since only the active portion of the timeline uses resources. I bet Im seeing a bit of a hardware issue with the ocassional freeze/lock up. I recently had a memory issue I thought was over.

My main PC with the big screen is on 24/7, though the screen turns off after an hour or so. Here in Oregon we can certainly use the heat in this room during the winter months.

My two laptops are set to hibernate when I close the lids, which is essentially the same as powering off (though with a much faster "reboot"). I almost never do an actual reboot on any machine. This is with XPpro and V7d.

There may have been one or two times in the past when I found a fresh boot seemed to make a difference to a very large project, but it was so long ago I can't recall the details now. It may have had something to do with black frames.

The only time I have to reboot is when I've used the Windows StandBy function one too many times. I'm usually good for 3-4 days, but then things start acting flaky, not only Vegas but other apps as well.

If this were the Premiere forum, I would say yes. But with Vegas I never have rebooted during an edit, though the computer is turned off overnight.
