Hi Randy,

Yes because it is re-encoding the audio to AC-3. This is a good thing, since among other benefits, AC-3 takes up less space. It does not degrade the audio.

Hey thanks Mike,
I was thinking V4 encoded to AC3 upon selecting the default MPEG2. What is the optimum way to create high quality DVDs if one owns V4 and DVDA? I searched but didn't find definite answer on the forum (although I feel sure it's been discussed). I'm guessing it would be render as mpeg2 with DVDA NTSC video Stream (in the US).
Thanks again Mike,
Randy

I know that mpeg audio is "non standard" but would still like the option to burn the DVD that way if I want to. When I'm testing a quick DVD and DVDA reencodes the audio to AC3, that's a delay and so for the time being, Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2 still gets the business even though I like what I see from DVDA.

Hi Al,

Actually, you can specify if you want it to convert audio to AC3 or not. I think the default is set to "Automatic" which will encode it.

Click on the Optimize button in the first prepare DVD screen. In the lower left hand corner of the next window is a setting for Media Audio Settings. Change this to PCM Stereo to leave it alone.

Also, if your video file is already Mpeg2 compliant, DVDA will not reencode it, even though it looks like it wants to. A green check mark means no more reencoding.

Thanks guys...

I don't know Mike, if the V4 MPEG2 with the default template is MPEG2 compliant then I would beg to differ, as it was showing for several minutes (before I cancelled) that it was rendering the audio.
I'm guessing AC3's only advantage is that it saves HD space right (a bit like an mp3 would)? If that's the case then I'll just use Mike's tip and go for the "don't change" option. Can anyone provide a link for an in-depth explanation of AC3?
Thanks again,
Randy

Mike

Thanks for the reply. Like Randy however, I find that DVDA does reencode the audio. I looked at the PCM option but am assuming that that would give you LPCM audio which is the last thing that I want since it is much bigger than mpeg or AC-3 audio. Have you found that files encoded with the DVD NTSC template in Vegas (which gives mpeg audio) are not reencoded when selecting the PCM option in DVDA?

Mpeg audio will always be re-encoded, as either PCM or AC-3 (user choice).

Thanks for giving us the info. Is there any chance of mpeg audio authoring being added in a future update? I would like to use just Vegas plus DVDA but the fact that DVDA always reencodes mpeg audio seems a pity. Doesn't it make the excellent Vegas DVD NTSC template somewhat useless?

I do a lot of experimental encodes and for speed, right now, it's Vegas, encode with DVD NTSC, into Ulead DVD Movie Factory, automatic chapter generation at one minute intervals, burn and watch.

Thanks...

Al
