Is mp4 audio in QT export fixed in VMS11?

Hi all

I am still on VMS9, which has a long-documented crash when exporting MOV files with audio encoded as mp4.

An old workaround for this used to be to replace a Quicktime dll in the VMS program folder with one downloaded from the Sony site, but this solution no longer works under Windows 7 64-bit.

So I would like to ask whether the mp4 exporting bug is fixed in the latest version of the program (perhaps it was fixed already in v10, I'm not sure...)?

If the crash is because of Quicktime, then it's a quicktime bug. The reason why the documented trick does not work in 64bit Windows is because you have the 64bit of Quicktime installed. You'd need to force your quicktime to install in 32bit for its library to work with the 32bit Vegas. Alternatively, move to Vegas Pro, which is 64bit.

However, to be sure, simply install the trial of Platinum 11. I don't understand why people ask these questions that require lots of work from the rest of us to reproduce, while the user can simply install VMS11 and try it exactly the way he wants to. Vegas can be installed in parallel, it does not overwrite your old installation, neither it corrupts it.

Also, why are you exporting via the Quicktime plugin as mov/mp4? You should be using MainConcept MP4 (h.264/AAC) which creates Quicktime-compatible files, and it's the best way to export (both in terms of quality because of VBR support, and because it's more stable).

With respect, I would hope that this would not 'require lots of work' by other users to reproduce -- just export anything of any length as a MOV file, with any settings that include mp4 audio. Unfortunately, I don't have time currently to demo the entire program, and wouldn't want to waste the 30-day trial to test this issue alone.

Regarding MainConcept MP4 (h.264/AAC), this option is not available in VMS9. It is only AVC/AAC, with two iPod templates that cannot be edited by the user.

I have this same problem. I am on Windows 7 64 bit and just purchased Vegas Platinum 11. I have no sound on MP4 files exported from Vegas and the published fix (swapping the .dll file) causes Vegas to crash.

So how do I carry out a 32 bit install of Quicktime on my 64 bit machine as Eugenia suggests?

I have just tried to render a MP4 Quictime mov file on my Windows 7 64bit-machine running VMS 11 , and there are no problem with the sound.

If you are using 32 bit Vegas, you should use 32 bit Quicktime.
For VMS 9, only Quicktime versions 7.6.2 and earlier are compatible. The .dll was not an across-the-board fix.
With VMS 11, newer versions (7.6.4 and later) of Quicktime can be used. However, there have been some spot issues reported with the very latest 7.7.
VMS 11 also supports custom render options for Mainconcept AVC, which is what I would suggest. If you truly need the MOV wrapper, then purchasing QT Pro is an option available to you.

If it works for others, then maybe I am missing an audio codec. (I have no experience with these things and it has taken days just to figure out the optimal format to play HD 24p on my pc let alone how to get it all to actually work.).

However, I would like to rule out the incompatible Quicktime possibility. The problem is I don't know how to install a 32 bit version of QT. There's only one version of the installer on the QT download page and no options to select during the installation. Presumably the installer determines what your operating system is and installs accordingly.

Are the older versions of QT 32 bit only?

Wow, this really gets confusing when two different posters with possibly different Vegas versions, possibly different OS versions, possibly different Quicktime versions, and certainly different source files, with god-knows what other dll's and codec packs are on their systems, say they are having the "same problem" and are looking for a common solution in the same thread.

I was able to find out that 7.6 and later are listed as being compatible with 64 bit versions of Windows. That doesn't mean they are 64 bit libraries!

Also, the incompatibility issues with most Windows NLE apps (not just Vegas) beginning with QT 7.6.4, and the catch-up game that all those software manufacturers had to engage in, are well documented both here and on the internet. I stand by my original statement as being correct to the best of my knowledge. Best of luck to you both.

Thanks for your help. When I'm home and have got the kids in bed I'll try to find a pre-7.6 version of QT. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'll investigate other causes.

Rendering to other formats, such as avi, doesn't give me any problem with sound -- only the MP4 files exhibit this problem, so it seemed this would be an appropriate thread. I guess I should have started a new one.

Wow.
You haven't understood a single thing I've said.
I never suggested using a QT version earlier than 7.6 with 64 bit Windows OS.
I guess you should go to apple.com, read the documentation yourself, and draw your own conclusions.
I am checking out on this discussion before this makes me any crazier!
I do hope the OP finds a solution for his issue . . .

No need to get crazy over this. I probably haven't understood what you are saying and as in fact you didn't suggest any specific course of action I am left to draw inferences. You said I should use a 32 bit version of QT with 32 bit Vegas. I had previously asked how to do that and I still don't know.

Answer: Download and install Quicktime 7.6.0 or later.

I un-installed QT 7.7 and installed 7.6.0. The problem remains.

If I can't find a way to get it working I will start another thread.

By the way this is a thread from June. I seriously doubt the original poster has a problem with my reviving it.
