Is New Blue Titler Pro 3 worth it?

Marc S wrote on 5/28/2014, 10:50 AM
So I've been watching the demos and I'm impressed. I'm considering buying the upgrade but was hoping to find out from actual users if there are any major issues I should be aware of. Someone on another thread mentioned some really long render times. Is this an issue? Any major stability or output quality problems?

It seems like a good solution to the many half-baked weak Vegas titlers.

Thanks, Marc

Yes, it's worth it if you need some pizzazz in your titles and/or you need to set up multiple titles with changing copy in each. Most of my output is 720 and rendering is not an issue. Timeline performance is not quite 'perfect,' but is pretty fluid and I have noticed that creating the title in a separate event performs better than applying it directly to a video event.

If you have an upgrade, it's definitely worth 99 bucks.

I have used a mix of Titles and Text and Titler Pro 2/3. I have not noticed any stability problems, but I have read some reports in this forum. NewBlue has recently changed TP to run as an independent process. This moved TP into it's own unique GPU driver context independent of the Vegas context. They say this solved remaining conflicts in Vegas. Vegas uses OpenCL and NewBlue OpenGL and apparently getting the two to peacefully co-exist at the same time has issues.

As for performance I have not noticed issues but I have a fast AMD 7950 card. Performance while rendering can vary quite dramatically depending on the text style used. Layering and texture/environment mapping and such.

+1 worth the $99.

I'm on the fence. Don't really use TP2 that much. I already own the ON AIR lower thirds that they give you with the $99 upgrade.

I wonder will they give you some other $59 Lower Third package if you already own ON AIR ??

Ok. I got kicked over the top. Seems like it's well worth upgrading for $99. Service was exceptional with Edward arranging to get me the Prime Time Lower Thirds instead of the offered ON AIR product (which I already had) .. All installed without a hitch.

I would advise taking Edward's advice from another thread to help smooth out playback:
1. In Titler Pro go to Settings and turn off "High Quality Preview"
2. In Titler Pro go to Settings and turn off "Use Motion Blur"
3. In Vegas, change the preview to "Preview (Auto)" (won't change the rendering times but can help in design mode)

There use to be a 14 day trial of TP3 but I don't see that anymore on the NewBlue site.

I'm puzzled a bit about the bundled offer (VP12 Pro -> VP13 Pro with TP3) ... I already have TP2, so if I take the offer with the VP13 Pro upgrade, is that an additional license for TP3? Can I still continue to use TP2 on another computer?

There is still a Titler Pro 3 trial. It's not on the website at the moment but NewBlue will be happy to provide the most current installer to anyone who asks.

This link should always be the most current build:

The upgrade is simply a Titler Pro 3 retail license. It really has nothing to do with any Titler Pro 2 licenses you may have. Yes, Titler Pro 2 could still be used on other machines but I'd change them all to Titler Pro 3

Many have asked about multiple machines. We understand that many people have both a desktop and laptop, for example, and it is OK to install on both.

If you have a workshop with multiple workstations, each needs their own license.

I've been doing this video thing for quite a while now. Not very many years ago the price of doing a fraction of what Titler Pro 3 can do was way beyond what any of us could afford, both in terms of software and the rather hefty hardware it would take to do it. The idea that you can do this now for a hundred dollar upgrade kind of blows me away. So does the idea that people coming up would think of this as too expensive. Not that I don't understand this perspective. Heck, you can do some pretty fancy titling these days on your phone with a $5 app! Stock templates, but still...

Yeah, count me as a vote that says that Titler Pro 3 is well worth the price, especially the upgrade price!

Laurence, awfully well said.

$99? I bought a curry for 2 of us and it cost me the same. No matter how hard I try I can't make a Lower Third with a Nan Bread and a Chicken Tikka Masala.

Grazie

You're right Lawrence, the technology advances are amazing and so are the pricing changes. In this case the price does not concern me as much as the time it takes to master something new. So many of the titlers available for Vegas have been half baked, full of bugs and eventually dropped when it comes to continued development.

I know that Titler Pro in the early days was a nightmare for stability so I stayed away but they seem to have solved those issues based on the feedback I'm hearing. Considering they are supporting so many NLEs I think it's probably safe to assume they will continue to develop it as well.

No kidding! Not just learning it but coming up with a set of presets and template that enable you to tie all this stuff together. That's why I got so bent out of shape about the instability of Vegas versions 11 & 12. It wasn't primarily the cost of the software. It was that huge investment of time I had in learning the Vegas approach. That and all my Vegas specific plugins.

The way I look at it, I am quite happy to support the development teams that make all of this possible. I am thrilled to be doing video for a living and am more than happy to have a part in making sure that all the people who write this code can have good lives and can work on this stuff full time. Take my money! You more than deserve it! Vegas 13 and Titler Pro 3 rock!

>> I can't make a Lower Third with ... a Chicken Tikka Masala

My three year old made a beautiful, abstract static one with a Chicken Tikka Masala the other day, it worked great when I pre-viewed it on my monitor, but when I rendered it for online viewing it never showed up up on anybody else's PC. Still works on mine though. I blame Microsoft Windows 8.
