Is PRE really PRE?

I was recently trying to send a signal PRE-fade from a track to either a Subgroup Buss or an FX Buss. I had the multi-purpose fader (as SF calls it) set to PRE.

I set the m/p fader to 0dB for the Buss to be routed to, and observed good signal on the Buss meter. However, when I lower the track volume fader, the signal to the Buss follows. According to the Signal Flow Diagram, selecting PRE is supposed to really be PRE-track fader. Therefore, it shouldn't have mattered what I did to the track volume fader as to what happens with the feed to the Buss.

Anyone else had any difficulty with using the PRE function? or am I missing something elementary here?

Thanks for any input.

I can't reproduce this, it's working correctly on my system. Maybe you are routing the channel fader to the buss unintentionally? If this is what is happening then you will definitely see the buss volume being affected if you move the channel fader. Check the routing button on the channel fader and make sure it isn't routed to the same bus you are feeding the Pre/buss fader too.

Where can you set the "pre" thing ?
I can't seem to find where it is.

Thanks

Right Click on the Volume slider and up will pop a menu "Pre Volume/Post Volume". Every sonic Foundry function is usually a "right click" away, depending on where your mouse is located in the window.

You are right.....I was assigning the track to the Subgroup buss. In this configuration, the send level follows the track volume. Additionally, when I assign the track to an FX buss and set the send level to PRE, the send level works independently of the track volume.

However, if I'm reading it correctly, the Signal Flow Diagram indicates that the send level to both an FX buss AND a Subgroup buss can be set for either PRE or POST track volume fader.

In reality, though, I guess sending a signal PRE to a subgroup buss doesn't really make too much sense. And, come to think of it, I'm really not sure now what it was that I was trying to do that I made me want to make it happen that way. Hmmmmmm.......

Anyway, thanks.
