Is there a Media "Safe Delete"

bansl wrote on 6/24/2011, 7:34 AM
So, I have a directory or more full of media for the project. Throughout the Project editting cycle, media has been added and discarded.

Now the project is complete.

Problem is, there is a lot of media in the project directories that has been discarded, is there any way to recognise these files so that they can be deleted?

I could use the "Project Media" dialog and delete everything with Use Count=0. but a lot of the media is no longer listed in there, due to just having been "Deleted" and not "Deleted from Disk"..

When I am editing the Project, does VMS keep all of the used media files open, and hence locked against being deleted?

If this were so then I could just issue a wildcard delete afgainst my media directories and only the media not included in the project would be deleted.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Bryan.

You've asked a complex question for which their is a simple answer.

1) In the "Project Media" pane, hit the lightning bolt icon. This will delete unused media references from the project.

2) In the "Save As" dialog, save a copy of the project in a new folder, with the "Copy media with project" button checked. The copy will have only the media actually used on the timeline.

Hey, thanks musicvid.

That is just the answer I was looking for.

And in the preferences you will also find the option:
"close media files when not the active application"

""close media files when not the active application"

All that means is the active media are dropped from RAM when Vegas is minimized.
Has nothing to do with the original question of saving only the project media.

I just dropped a movie file to the timeline,
check that the "close media files when not the active application"
is not checked, going to total commander, and it cannot delete
the mediafile, because Vegas use it.

Why don't you start your own thread, and someone will explain it to you, instead of hijacking this entirely unrelated discussion?

Unrelated? :O I wrote a solution exactly for this:
"then I could just issue a wildcard delete afgainst my media directories"

Your method require a lot of disc space and time, if the project is not a small one. My method simple delete what he don't need anymore.
Sorry, i don't start a new thread, when this is also one solution for this problem.

"Has nothing to do with the original question of saving only the project media. "

Saving only the project media = Delete all of the unused media

And again, sorry for trying to help somebody :(
