I think you'll need to render the entire movie as a wav, replace your audio with that and then edit it.

I played around a bit an it seems like I do have to render as an intermediate step. I thought by rendering to mpeg1 it would be faster, but it wasn't. I don't care about the video quality for this step. Is there a way to render audio only ? The fastest way may be to render in AVI but then hard drive space becomes an issue.

MPEG1 will probably give you pretty lousy audio and you'll lose a lot. I wouldn't recommend it.

To render audio only: Make Movie / Save it to your hard drive / Advanced Render / Save as type: Wave (Microsoft) (*.wav). This will let you create a .wav file.
