Is this a daft idea? Drafting work in MPEG1?

Grazie wrote on 9/11/2003, 4:21 PM
For those who are RAM Challeneged or MotherBoard-Challenged - myself in this catergory - would it make sense to do stuff in MPEG - yes lower quality - but would it render and behave faster than AVI? THEN when all is completed do a File Replace option and swing back in the original AVI? - Is this daft?

Actually editing with MPEG is going to be a lot slower since it is already a compressed format. Without going into all the technical deatils about I, P and B frames, basically editing with Uncompressed files is the best way to go, MPEG will be a lot slower.

If you wanna work fast and light, try something like this: render out your source files to uncompressed .avi with the same name, but at a 164x120 frame size, 8 bit color, 15 frames per second (NTSC) or 180x144, 8 bit color, 12.5fps (PAL). These files will be about 1/96 the size of full uncompressed and about 1/12 the size of DV .avi files. Put these files in a new directory, rename the original directory to something else, then rename the new directory to the original name. Since they're uncompressed they'll fly very fast and not take up much resources. The resolution and frame rate is good enough to make most edit decisions. Then when you've got your edit near complete switch back to the full size files by renaming the directories back.

Thanks Kelly - Excellent! - Y'know, my "still" novice approach to this NLE stuff stems from an exsisting major lack of knowledge of the fundamentals of pc-NLE technology. Often I feel and know this hobbles me . .. I'll just keep on displaying this within this forum and other places . . no worries . . as long as I'm getting my filmic output, I should worry - yeah?

Still in love with this art form,

A daft idea? More like a draft idea, I'd say...

When I bought my first IEEE 1394 card it came bundled with a video editor (which was called the same as my excellent but oh so old sound card). One neat thing about that editor was that you could capture video in draft mode, edit and then let the editor recapture only the used bits in full DV from the original tape, thus creating a final AVI ready for further rendering or to transfer back to DV tape.
Since I already had Vegas, I never used the other thing. Plus all my original takes does not usually come from the same tape.

I'd like to know if Kelly's idea works for you (because it sounds good technically), and for how long you have the patience to go about it that way (because it sounds a bit cumbersome).

OT:
Grazie, I'm sure you didn't notice, but nearly a week just went by without me posting here. That was because my internet PC went down. Mainboard collapsed completely. I cried all the way to the bank. This could have killed my London trip in November, but the ticket is already bought and paid for.

Yeah! Here come the Vikings! - Good to see you've got your priorities correct.

On the the Kelly "Thang" . . Yes I'll give it a go - and yes it does seem a wee bit cumbersome. I'm still putting "off" that major new pc/XP upgraded 3.2 Ghtz box. Income's have been a bit thin on the ground PLUS a major motor car maintenance bill. Uggh! Soooo.... I'm just looking for ways to "squeazing" out a bit more from my laptop & MAXTOR drive setup . . . . I'm now getting close to realising that something of a better real time preview is reeeeally what I need. I don't need to do many complicated FXs, just need to see what I've done through a looping session in V4 . . yeah?

November isn't it?

Where do you expect Vikings to set up camp? Brixton? Golders Green?
By the way, if I wanted Chzecko beer, I'd camp on the banks of the Donau.

Lets do the nft.
