Is this playback rate normal for .m2t file?

Okay, I just purchased Vegas 7.
I don't have an HDV camera, but will probably be getting one early next year.
So I downloaded a sample clip (.m2t file), put it on the Vegas timeline, and I'm only getting 8 or 9 fps.

Sample footage: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=75937

This is with a Pentium 4 Northwood, 3.0 GHz, 800 FSB, 1 GB RAM, ATI 9600 Radeon vid card, XP Pro.
I keep reading everyone getting playback rates of near 29.97 in the Vegas 7 timeline.
Is there something wrong here?
BTW, I have hyperthreading; both threads are only running about 40-50% and only ~500 MB RAM is being used, so the system is not being taxed.

Also, I I play it back using StreamClip, it's much smoother (faster fps) playback.

Help me understand...

Dan

m2t, Best/Full preview quality, secondary display. 29.970 with a Pentium 4, 3.2HT machine with ATI x700 primary and ATI 9800 secondary. Best/Auto blurs the output, and slows it down.

These are the best settings I've found. My secondary monitor is an actual TV, not a computer display. TV connected to Secondary display via DVI.

Set your preview to Preview/Auto, and you should be seeing realtime playback. Be sure you don't have opacity set to anything but 100%.
Double click your preview window to be sure it's sized correctly.
With that computer, you should be seeing real-time playback, yes.

For internal playback (no external monitor) here are my benchmarks:

Preview window size 360x270

Best/Auto: V6d- 6fps; V7- 20fps
Good/Auto: V6d- 11fps; V7- 29.970fps
Preview/Auto: V6d- 29.970fps; V7- 29.970fps

Hmm...
Project settings: HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080, 29.970 fps)
Preview-Auto (double-clicked), 360x270
Opacity 100%

Now, I haven't rendered to an intermediate...I don't have to, with Vegas 7, do I?

I went from Vegas 5 to Vegas 7. Never had V6.

Any other ideas?

Check that your Project Properties Audio tab matches your footage. I think the default is 44Khz, I set my default project to 48Khz. If Vegas has to convert audio, that has some impact on playback.

Also, I do have one m2t that will absolutely not play back at 29.970 no matter what. Most the others work fine.

Create your own m2t with some complex generated media, like keyframe a gradient to change colors and move some text across the screen. Render as Mainconcept MPEG2, HDV 1080-60i. Close and reopen V7 and import that new file for testing.

Intermediates are cheating!

Preview size=720 x 480
Preview/Auto
no intermediate
29.97 fps, rock solid, all the time.

Try zooming your timeline so you can see the entire project. If that doesn't allow you to see full frame rate on that machine, there is something amiss somewhere.

Okay, well I tried a different sample clip (http://www.realm.cc/upload/disjecta/house_sparrow.m2t )

This one plays back at 29 + fps. I'm running antivirus software and a few other background apps, so this is definitely acceptable.

I guess there's something wrong with the first sample clip I tried (bad luck on my part, as usual...)

One big difference to note between the sample clips:
the first is from a Canon HV10, the second (the one that plays correctly) is from a Sony HC3. Conspiracy??? ;)

thanks for your help,

Dan

Running antivirus while running vid??
Not a good idea.
I have an HC10, and while it's mostly useless for my needs, Vegas does at least play it back.
You want to see some really, really nasty problems with the HC10...I wish I'd seen it before buying... Appears to be stabilizer problems. There are 50 downloads on that link...view it while it's hot. :-)
