Issues VEGAS Pro 21 build 300 - GoPro 11 5.3k Clipping Video Lag

joshua-noesser wrote on 4/9/2024, 11:47 AM

Good Day Everyone,

Since the last build was released when I drop in Go Pro Footage from my GoPro 11 running 5.3k 60 fps video it is causing lag when editing the clip lengh. Didn't do this on the last build, wondering if anyone has ideas how to get this fixed. The issue is the lag is bad enough that it makes it hard to clip to the right spot in the video.

This is new to the latest release. I included a quick video of what is going on. This is only happening for this footage and not my other camera footage which is 4k 60fps 10 bit.

i9 - 4900k

Win 11

96 GB Ram

Nvidia 4080

Presumably your last version was building a video proxy, based on your description.

Is your new version building a video proxy when you introduce your beefy GoPro clips? You will know from the progress bar on the lower left.

Yeah, it still has the same video proxy from last time. The machine doesn't even need it as it runs smoothly without them; I had to use a video proxy before to get around the bug with the Nvidia encoder that was fixed in this release.

It can run the video without issue, hover over it and move the curser, but it just can't move the edges of the video clip (Edit length / start or stop of clip)

I did notice that all edits seemed a little laggier with this update as for editing with outside playback being better. I seem to notice now that all the media seems slightly laggy, whereas the 5.3 media is majority laggy.

Disable legacy AVC decoding.

Okay, trying. Prior to the this release, we had to enable this to make the software stable.

ALO wrote on 4/9/2024, 5:24 PM

I'm definitely seeing the same thing -- laggy, including while scrubbing through the timeline or trimming clips on the timeline. Gopro 5k but via Vegas proxies. Legacy AVC not enabled. Big difference from the previous build, which was very smooth including playing 5k source in best.

joshua-noesser wrote on 4/9/2024, 5:54 PM

Disable legacy AVC decoding.

might have helped slightly, but still lagging . Thanks for the advise.

Any other ideas?

Non-legacy AVC decoding in this release means you are using mxcompound, the new plugin that it quite fast with NVIDIA decoding.

If you check it you are actually using so4compound, which is how 208 worked when legacy AVC was unchecked. There's no direct way to go back to compoundplug which is what 208 did when you checked legacy AVC.

Next question is exactly what is this footage? GoPro has a number of formats. Is it AVC or HEVC?

@joshua-noesser @RogerS Hi, GoPro 11 only creates HEVC files,

Dexcon wrote on 4/10/2024, 5:24 AM

Yes, 4K and 5.3K in GoPro 11 is HEVC only (most unfortunately) so its unlikely that the legacy AVC setting will have any effect. Instead, try checking the experimental HEVC decoding setting in File I/O and see if that helps.

Thanks for clarifying, I've only worked with older GoPros.

FWIW, experimental HEVC decoding is so4compound, which can actually be fast with some HEVC types and at least Intel iGPUs.

Former user wrote on 4/10/2024, 7:43 AM

@RogerS Hi, this is a GoPro 5.3 HEVC 16,9 10bit.MP4 if you want it, I created this just for this post, I don't use 10bit so can't really comment, this plays ok & can be moved, trimmed etc. no prob. Add an fx or two & it slows crossfades but just playing the clip with/without an fx reaches 59.94fps without prob.

PS. I have Auto Proxies turned Off, Legacy AVC & experimental HEVC is also OFF

RogerS wrote on 4/10/2024, 8:07 AM

Thanks Gid, with similar settings on my laptop (GTX 1050) your media is not so editable at best/full but is mostly full framerate at preview/auto. I don't see particular problems.

I'll test with my desktop (RTX 2080) later.

joshua-noesser wrote on 4/10/2024, 12:31 PM

The more I test with it I notice the problem is there for everything. But the larger the format the more noticeable it is.

PS - I can hear the hard drives working that store the files, which wasn't the case before. I can't tell what they are doing but almost sounds like when they populate thumbnails. Does anyone know how to turn off where it constantly creates new thumbnails?

Sorry, I thought someone else answered the question above. Where do I get this from? But this is happening with all media sources. It is just less noticeable with smaller formats but it is definitely there.

I am including below one of the media files (Its small) from the GoPro. If you want one from the GH6 that is running 4k 60fps, 10-bit let me know.

@joshua-noesser HDD are slow, put a few files on your main (C) & see what happens, how do hey play,? I know you said 'Didn't do this on the last build' 👍

MediaInfo -

The App is called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍 or enlarge the MediaInfo window so it incs audio & screenshot a pic like you did above.

Like this

These HDD have a throughput of over 400 Mbps with very low latency, so should be more than quick enough.

Okay, I put it on the M2 (C Drive). As far as results, it is exactly the same. I can scroll over the clip (Dragging the cursor) or hit play and it shows the video smooth and great, but if I try to edit the length of the clip, gets laggy while doing that.

I haven't tired to add any FX yet, so not sure if that will compound the issue or not.

FYI - I tried it with a proxy.

Thanks for the help with media info. Going to paste in the next post.
