Issues with composited graphics

We create mechanical assmbly/disassembly videos.
We often need to highlite the location of screws etc.
What I have done is to capture to clipboard an image.
Pull that image into a graphis editor, and draw circles around the screws, then delete the original image.
I then pull the image of the circles back into Vegas as a composite, and key out the background.
In the preview pane the circles line up properly with the image, but when the project is rendered they are skewed.
The original image has a pixel aspect of .9 .. the circle image 1.0.
If I render w/ a .9 aspect things are skewed.
with 1.0 they line up but the image width is lessened ..

any thoughts as to why this is occurring .. is there a plugin available for Vegas to superimpose graphics ??

This works properly if you capture the image to a file rather than capturing to clipboard. When you capture to clipboard you get a 720x480 file, which is the DV frame size. However, the photo editing software will save it with a 1.0 pixel aspect ratio which is too wide. Placing this image back on the timeline ends up with a result that is squashed vertically. The proper aspect ratio is 0.909090... When you save the image to a file instead you'll get 654x480 at 1.0 which is really what you want so that circles still come out circles instead of ovals. When you import a 654x480 image back onto the timeline it will fill the frame completely.

What you may want to try doing is to open up the properties screen for each image after importing it and setting the image's aspect ratio to 0.9091 (NTSC DV). This should line up the image properly, but your circles will be short & fat ovals intead of circles.

For greater flexibility, you could also draw a circle in your graphic app, save it in 32 bit with alpha (psd or png) and import it in Vegas. That's what i do every time with Fireworks.
