it's about that time for Vegas 7 wishes

Please post feature requests/comments ABOUT listed feature requests here. Please don't start getting into arguments which will deflect the attention away from this list.

Editing / Workflow:

- pencil tool for envelopes
- eraser tool for quick deletion of material
- slip tool that would slip the material inside the event so that the left edge stays put, but the right edge moves with the slip - essentially allowing for the start material to be changed but the end of the event stays the same.
- an auto-quantize feature which would differentiate between editing audio and editing video. Quantize always on with video. Quantize off for audio (unless you want it)
- Ripple edit: can someone tell me when I would want the following to occur?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa cccccccccccccccccc

why, when I trim event "a" back, does event "b" move too? I know you've explained the "logic" of this, but I don't see when you'd ever actually want that to happen? I would only expect items that end after the event I'm trimming to move. Furthermore, if the situation looks like this:

and I trim "a" back, b doesn't move. Why? and again, why would I want it to anyway?

- Trim Silence feature
- apply non-realtime effects preview that would play the event in context of the project.
- a "consolidate events" feature, for comping vocals or voice tracks. Instead of rendering to a new track.

Global Behavior -
- mono button on Busses
- True solo behavior (solo=solo, no pre-volume effect sends in the solo mix!)
- a find and relink right-click context option in the Project Media for offline media.
- previewing on an External Monitor still drifts for me. Not by much, but when playin back for more than a couple of minutes, I need to hit stop and start again to reset sync. Sync is fine with WSD.
- track freeze feature
- the ability to lock events but still make them trimmable, asr fadeable, etc.
- extract entire cds with regions.
- save and trim as .veg (trims all surrounding events, preserves envelopes and effects, flushes media pool, and moves new selection to beginning of project and saveas as new nestable "scene")
- Keyframe style effect automation
- VU meters
- Pitch envelopes
- while you're at it, time compress expand envelopes... :) Oh, and BETTER time compression.
- drag and drop effect chain from one track to another
- lockable track heights.
- the ability to save snapshots and copy snapshots from the trimmer view
- a "Force Relink" button in the Project Media view that would bring up the offline media dialog so you can search and relink with local media instead of media that might be on a network drive - this would be very helpful for entire projects that get copied across a network but still link back to the network path like \\cdm\projects\ etc.

more to come. I'm sure.

thanks for listening.

First thing i have in mind.

Some kind of group list. I have tons of different groups sometimes and whould like to find one, Simply click in the group list of the specific group and everything in the group gets highlighted. Ofcourse it should be possible to rename the groups in the grouplist.

Better vst fx support, like tempo sync and so.
Midi tracks and vsti support like in acid.

Thats whas it for now :) :)

I think your first idea is a great one. A group list. Why didn't I think of that?

Well I use Vegas 5 right now at work and am considering buying Vegs 6 for at home, so I've just downloaded the trial version to see what's up....

How about they give us an option ON INSTALLATION for what features we want included. This type of thing you see on alot of bigger programs. Include a Video and Audio catagory, that branches off into more spacific things. This way, I can just uncheck "Video" entirely, uncheck Media Manager, and uncheck all the other junk I'll never use. (No disrespect to video users, that's mainly what I use it for at work actually)

The only thing more awesome then this would to have a "Vegas Audio" version with minimal to no video features. Yeah, they could sell it for less too if they want to make use happy.

Other features that I'd like to see (or maybe just haven't discovered yet):

1. Automation peramater linking with expressions - the ability to assign one perameters value to another perameter, and apply some basic math if needed. This idea is coming from a similar After Effects type feature. I find it very useful for video type stuff in that program, and can imagine lots of useful uses for it in audio as well, even some basic stuff like having several tracks' volume automation be in sync.

2. Tempo/Time Sig. changes, just like in ACID
I probably wouldn't use this feature much as I tend NOT to stick to a grid, but I think alot of people have wanted it.

3. MIDI - this point is sorta two fold. Either have Vegas adopt this feature from ACID, or have ACID adopt the audio features from Vegas. Man, this product would be selling much more if either were the case.

3. The ability to have more plug-in in view at a time (or maybe I just don't know how)

4. Function to re-apply the "follow cursor" when playing - Again, maybe I just don't know how... When playing, the window will scroll along with cursor, but if you start clicking about the interface, like at the timeline bar, it'll stop following the cursor but to continue to play. I'd like a feature that re-focuses on the cursor. Better yet would be a toggle button to either follow or not follow, like they have in Logic. It's just an annoyance for me right now.

5. Hide Video thumnails - this used to be a feature, I can't find it in ver6, why? Even when editing video, I have no use for the thumbnails. Again, sorry if I just missplaced it!

6. Option for Pre-Pan effect send. I know, I know, you use the pan-plugin to do this, but all our old Vegas files didn't have that plug!

7. hmm, I really really like Vegas, STILL after all these years and other audio programs bulking up. My only request is that it STAY LEAN and don't go for the fancy GUI or gobs of buttons/features. Really, as much as this might seem, I don't really want a whole lot to change.

4. Panning setting to allow fx send to follow pan again
5. WAY less cpu useage (like vegas 3)
7. AS above tempo changes at least for the grid
8. Ability to see grid without snapping on

Type '\' (back slash)

Whats with asio dm??? What can be done with other apps[cubase???] that vegas has problems with?

mangooo wrote on 11/4/2005, 4:38 AM
For example this is a realy cool vst fx but it will not work in vegas becuase there is no tempo sync support.

with other words vegas is not a VST 2.0 compliant host. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

There's just too much latency in the direct monitoring to be of any use, I think. In other programs there is latency, just alot less. At least, that's been my experience. If I had something like RME's total mix I'd think I would be just happy simply using that (I have used it btw)...
James Young wrote on 11/4/2005, 9:52 AM
I thought of another feature that might be nice for use old-timers...

Import old Vegas projects

It would simply add a pan plugin on every track and set it's settings/automation to match. It would probably do some other things to make 100% sure it's the same as it used to be (not sure what)...
Sari wrote on 11/4/2005, 12:02 PM
Why is it that I have never had any latency problems with Vegas 6 ASIO 2.0.
Am I the only one with no problems with Direct Monitoring in ASIO 2.0.
Am I normal!
rraud wrote on 11/5/2005, 11:55 AM
- all the above
- Apply plug-in or chains to individual events.
- yeah, an audio only version with lmited video support for post. (like the original Vegas audio
- OMF support for sure.
- Side chainning
H2000 wrote on 11/5/2005, 2:17 PM
there are some good suggestions so far.

I was actually hoping that the UAD-1 rendering problem would be fixed in V6, but I emailed support and never heard back. Does anyone know if it's fixed yet? If not in V6, hopefully they will fix it in V7 or I'll never be able to upgrade from V5!

Assuming it gets fixed, I'll add that I would like to see sends from busses. Also, the routing/panning should either be put back to the way it was or it should be selectable.

Hi Charles,
SWEET list!
I'd like to add assnignable groups.
Import of Acid sessions.

Realtime audio event FX
tazio wrote on 11/7/2005, 7:53 PM
I've already posted these on the Video post, but I figure why not here for discussion.

1. A "Restore Sync" function - you know for when you accidentally move an audio clip, so that you can put it back to where it was recorded.

2. A "Move Event" function. Which would work something like: Select Event > MOVE TO > wherever. Wherever could be home, marker, end of last event etc. I know that this can be done with Copy/Paste or mouse, but this would get rid of a helluva lot of mousework! Especially when programmed into a controller.

3. I used to use software called Producer and Spectral for Prisma - anyone remember it? It was great for an early DAW. It had the Restore Sync function. It also had a great tool known as the parking bay in a strip along the top of the screen. You could park events, or groups of events in these bays. Great for doing multiple versions of things where you can quickly drag something onto the screen.

Oh, kind of like lanes in Cubase/Nuendo. Nice option.

One thing that I thing would be useful would be a window that lists all of the effects being used in the project what tracks they're on, what type they are (DX, VST, Powered), possibly the preset they're using. Something like the media pool. Maybe you could put this in the media pool.
Since you can have SO many plugins running now and some plugins can have issues (UAD-1) I've found that I have to hunt around for particular plugins. THis can take some time with a project with 70 tracks and 30 plugins all over the place.
I'd be happy if V7 could work as well or better than the UAD-1 that V5 does. V6 has too many issues with the UAD-1 to be usable.
Track meters could be cool.
Let me open an Acid project with Vegas in some way. I'd be happy to manually render all the Acid project loops so that Vegas could just open them as prerendered .wav files. Recreating the tracks, vol, pan, fx setting for an Acid project in Vegas can be a big pain.
Why transfer an Acid project to Vegas?
Because I overdub and mix in Vegas because it has cross-fades and other features that Acid doesn't that are required for mixing.

- analog (or digital) insert on track or bus for outboard gears
- auxes with automation
- midi command send/recevie for outboard reverb programing
- routing panel
- expanded mixer to see tracks and busses with plugins
- better integration with third-party controllers

Foreverain4 wrote on 11/16/2005, 5:09 AM
would be cool if you could insert an acid project as a track. it would pay attention to whatever changes are made to the orignal acid project, but would act just like a track in vegas...

1. FIX the damn UAD-1 bugs!
2. More control surface support. Currently there's only one REAL choice with all other options being some sort of a generic workaround. I understand THAT the control surface makers are supposed to develop this but with Vegas now known primarily as a video app, there's not much incentive for them to do so. So the responsibility is now Sony's if we are to have something other than the Mackie as a viable option.
3. I also would like the option to avoid installing the video features as opposed to manually turning everything off. This get really tedious when needing to do reinstalls during troubleshooting sessions. Better yet, separate the apps so we can buy only what we need.
4. Take whatever time is necessary to fix ALL known bugs before putting out the next version. I personally don't care if this takes another couple of years. Just get it right-PLEASE!

I would like to have more and more fx sends visible as you increase track height. Other wise you are wasting all that screen space with a big gray box. Also saves time switching between the viewed control (pan/fx1/fx2 etc) all the time.

As an extension of this, when you click on the pan header to choose a different parameter to adjust, it would be nice if the list that popped up had the current values of the various parameters displayed next to them. So you would know out of your (for example) 5 fx sends which was already in use on that track and be able to select it first time.
And a further extension would be the ability to click on this value in the list and adjust it directly. When the list closed, your 'global' adjustment slider would be on the same parameter as before.

A 'Record' light. Difficult to see 'at a glance' if recording is occuring at zoomed-out magnification.

Foreverain4 wrote on 11/17/2005, 6:41 AM
eeeh, whats the use? i cant beleive sony has fooled us in to sticking around this long. if 7 does not step up the audio side (and the hello dolly look) (rolling eyes) i am jumping ship..
