This is not really new news. Sony has obviously purchased rights to market SoFo's apps under the Sony name. But they do not own them...........yet.
I personally would be fine with Sony taking over the apps. They are a good company that knows how to market their products. They also know how to appeal to the entire consumer spectrum, from home to pro.
I will expect no good out of this... Damit.... It was maybe a good financial step... but I hate Sony... Expectation:
1. Forum will go down
2. Customer support will be as reachable as Iosif Stalin
3. Updates to sofware will take centuries to take effect if ever
4. Forget about doing stuff "your way", now it will be the "Sony way", through the A$$
Arggggggggggggg
This info is flying over all sorts of forums - and may be doing great damage dependingon what the truth really is. SoFo should say *something* about what's going on.
I doubt you will hear anything from SOFO---it might effect the negotiations---I am sure they have offers and are in the process of choosing which one will be best for the numbskulls who run the joint. (Again, not the Dr. Dropouts etc--the soul of Sonic Foundry).
Sony Screenblast has been around for a long time now. They resell some of SonicFoundry's low-end applications under their own name. So do a few other places. This has nothing to do with the recent developments.
Chienworks is right. I bought a copy of Screenblast Image Editor (know as Viscosity in its former life) a while ago. This is nothing new. Also, check out the support pages for Screenblast products, they link to *gasp* Sonic Foundry.
While I fear the end of Sonic Foundry as we know it, I don't go around spewing FUD. Wouldn't it be funny if the "assets" SF mentioned selling was the CEO's furniture (or something like that).
I disagree that Sony's technical support is terrible". I've spent my entire pro video career using Sony products, from U-Matic in the 70s to today's Betacam SX and DVCAM, AND did buy their SMC 70G computer in the early 80s. None of us have ever had reason to complain about their Broadcast tech support and as Sony is a company built on service (at least for people in my line of business), I'm sure they will maintain the status quo vis-a-vis Sonic Foundry products.
