Jerky Playback in Preview with FlipShare MP4

I'm trying to make a music video in Vegas Movie HD Platinum 10.0. The video content came directly from my Cisco FlipShare camera. It is in .mp4 format.

I've scoured these forums for info on how to improve video playback in the preview window, but it still is so jerky that it is unusable. This is tough when trying to sync guitar playing to the music track!

What am I missing?

(My computer is a 2 gHZ Dell Studio laptop with 4GB RAM running Windows 7 64 bit).

There are two likely reasons you're seeing jerky playback with this video.

The first is that your computer isn't powerful enough to work with hi-def video. You can try reducing the quality of your Preview by clicking on the quality drop-down menu at the top of the Preview window and selecting a very low-quality preview.

But it still may not go. A 2 ghz machine (even if it is a dual-core machine) is at the low end of hi-def video editing specs but a laptop at that low end (Laptops are built for portability, not power) will certainly struggle with it.

You can try pre-rendering your timeline, which will speed up your playback somewhat.

The other issue is that Flip videos use a codec called 3ivx, a proprietary form of MP4 that is not supported by most editing software. You can try setting your project up for AVCHD and see if it can handle this video better -- but it still may not work entirely successfully. Flip cams are designed pretty much to shoot and post to YouTube, and they simply are not an easy fit for most video editors.
