Hi,
Hope it's ok to be a real newbie here.

I would like to delete out certain sections of a movie that I imported into Vegas Video 4 from my camcorder. I see that I can trim parts of the movie and delete them or cut them but this seems to only hide things, I want to delete sections permanently. Is this possible?

Also, does anyone know of very basic tutorials to help me get started in Vegas? I have no experience with video editing, yet. I need the basics and so far I haven't found Vegas Help files to be very helpful

Vegas does "non-destructive" editing, which means that you never alter the original files. After you have the edits you want set on the timeline you render to a new file. This new file will not contain the parts you've cut out. After that's done, you can delete the original clips if you wish, or hold on to them in case you want to make a different video using some of the parts that you had edited out before.

Once you cut or delete everything out, you just rerender it in the format of your choice. It can even be an new .avi.

Welcome Sharon,
I'm sure you will get many more ideas but one idea is to drop the movie on the timeline, cut out the sections you want too cut, close the gaps, then render the whole thing to a different name (.avi format). That creates a new movie for you with the parts cut out. The original movie is still in tact so don't worry if you've made a mistake. Just pull it in to another file and start over. If you are deleting it from the timeline or project, the origional will still be on your hard drive, Vegas is "non destructive" and only makes refernces to the AVI files (the origional clip). To delete it from your hard drive, go there and do it without Vegas. Then clean the media pool in Vegas because it will try to look for the missing file which isn't there any more. Make sure the clip you are deleting doesn't have anything usefull on it. If you use any part of it you need to have the whole clip. You can't delete just part of it. If it's huge and you only need a little piece of it you can render that part as a new AVI clip and then delete the origional which it was made from.
