Just Upgraded to V10

Jim H wrote on 10/16/2010, 12:07 PM
Having skipped V9 I thought it best to keep up a little with the new version of Vegas. I ordered the $149 upgrade with disc. Now I'm eager to get started. I think I'm going to have to wait for the disc to arrive before I can do a proper install unless there any way to obtain my serial number in advance? Otherwise, is there any down side to installing the trial version then entering my serial number and registering V10 once the disc arrives? I'm just worried about unnecessary reinstalls and/or clutter.

None at all. I installed the trial the day it was released and entered serial number when disc arrived a week or so later. No hassles, no muss, no fuss.

Go for it, but make sure your system meets the required specs. I see you're on XP. It needs to be at SP3.

Is there an advantage to ordering the disk rather than just doing the download? are you missing stuff by not buying the disk?

"are you missing stuff by not buying the disk?"

Yes. A disk. And waiting for the serial number.

I went for the disk as well. Yes, I could download and burn a disk .. but for $10 I get a "professional" disk with a "professional" label that I can store away should I need it again.

"......... that I can store away should I need it again."

This to me is one of the best parts of SCS software.
All the latest versions are available online, and if you registered so are all your serial numbers. This way if I need it again, all I do is get online and get it. No need to search for my install disc.

I hardly burn any software to disc. It all goes on RAID storage and backup drives. And, yes, it's all available online as well.

Yeah, I wasn't too interested in v9 either, but looking around, where's the "$149" upgrade deal you've mentioned?

I remember when I last upgraded, there was a "hidden" link somewhere and once I found it, it was cheaper than the "publicly facing" upgrade pricing.

Frankly I'm tired of seeing >black video< using v8 requiring me to downgrade my Apple Quicktime version which then messes up the iPhone and iPod connectivity with iTunes and other wares.

I was going to just go with Premiere CS5 but I don't have a 64-bit box just yet, hopefully by early next year.

Installing the v10 demo, I see >it works< now with the videos off my Kodak PlaySport where as firing up v8, all the videos are black.

Any pointers to that $149 offer if it is still available would be greatly appreciated!

why go with Premiere CS5? I have researched Final Cut Pro, Premiere and Vegas and Vegas just seems more flexible than all three.

And Sony, NICE WORK integrating the stabilization. It will save me at least a hundred hours over the next year.

Will,

The link and some alternatives (if that doesn't work) are in this thread:

Here's the funny part.... even if you get the disc, you will likely NEVER use it. Here's why. When Vegas released on the web, notice it's 10.0a. Take a look at what's on the disc - there's a good chance that it may very well be an OLDER version! So you'll always want to install the most current version on the website anyway. The only advantage of the disc that I see is any extras that come on it.
Jim H wrote on 10/16/2010, 6:26 PM
jetdv you're correct. My last purchase I did the same thing and ordered the disc. I entered the serial number online then just followed the download instructions online. I need the disc for the company who's paying for the software... so they "have" it.

Guess I should update my profile, I'm now using Win7-64. I'll be installing the 64 bit version of Vegas for the first time. Anything I should look out for?

You make a good point. Besides, the days of getting a retail box and full manual are long gone, so the disc itself isn't much of an big deal anyway.

"the disc itself isn't much of an big deal anyway"

What are you talking about??!!! It makes a great looking "Vegas" branded coaster! Don't you have the full set (Version 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, etc...) of coffee table Vegas coasters to proudly display to your guests?

Seriously, is there anything "extra" on the disc?

Kevin, thanks so much for the link - you've give me direct reason to upgrade now.

Considering how many times I've filled out that Sony >registration form<, you'd think they'd email and give a heads up!

I'm currently checking out the stabilization, I agree it's a nice thing to have considering the kind of stuff I shoot - I have to see how it works out for me though.

I look forward to being able to EDIT video again, not have black video, the new and updated features are secondary!

I wouldn't delete your old Vegas version just yet. The more I play with v10a the more problems I find. For example,

The noise reduction plug-in REFUSES to capture a noiseprint for whatever reason. The plug-in works fine with my v8 and v9 installs on the same video file.

I too have sipped the Kool-Aid and upgraded to V10. And having fully bought into the upgrade mind virus, I fear that I will soon upgrade my home system to V10 as well.
