Read the manual is one of the best things to do. For whatever reason a few of the settings are in different spots. For example if you are doing a dub via the front inputs the input must be set to "F1" and you need to make sure you also go to the setup screen to "VHS Mode set" and go to "Front Aux Input" and choose either "S-Video" (For the SVHS input) or "Video" for the RCA input. However notice there is nothing about the rear input here. That is because that option is under "Mode Set", not "VHS Mode Set".
Overall though , as I said, for going VHS > DV > PC/Firewire you push the "DV" button, Select "L-1" and than push the "S-VHS" button and hit play. You should now see your VHS/SVHS signal on your PC. For what you describe it also sounds like you have "Enable Device Control" checked in the settings. You need to uncheck that because there is no device control when you are on the VHS side. What happens is if no DV tape is inserted the VV cap mod will either ask you to insert one or you iwell get a blue screen saying you have lost device control. (this is an issue even when you do have a DV tape in the deck and are capturing - when you rewind the tape and eject it to load up another one the device will disconnect and you have to "reconect to current device" for each tape you insert. Not a deck issue but the way VV captures.)
>>>how do you PTT directly to VHS, I seem to have to go to DV first and then dub from it. <<<
1. Push the "DV ==>" button under "dub"
2. Push "S-VHS"
3. Push record.
That is it. Remember there is no deck control on the VHS side so you must disable device control in the VV settings. Also make sure that "F-1" is selected as your input.
Filmy, when you said: "So far my only disappointment is not figuring out how to get the Time Code window on the internal DV > S-VHS dub. I only see it on the output going to the monitor. So I guess you would have to just go to an external deck for the window burn copies. (And yes I know you can render a TC window with VV but that takes forever and the deck is 'real time')" You are wanting a TC burn in window on the dubbed S-VHS right? I don't think that you can do this with the SR-VS30U, even if you have a separate external VCR to dub to, I'm not sure why that is exactly, it could be that the S-VHS part of the deck doesn't have a SMPTE TC reader in it, I should play around with that sometime, I have an external SMPTE TC generator that will stripe VITC or LTC with or without a burn in window, which I haven't really used yet, mostly because I don't have enough cabling (how bad of an excuse is that?) Anyway sometime in the not too distant future I will experiment with the TC thing and I'll post what I find out.
I tried everything I could think of to replicate the DV dropped frames thing, with no success....seems like an odd problem, it must be a defective unit or something weird with the tapes. Wish I could help you.
>>>You are wanting a TC burn in window on the dubbed S-VHS right? <<<
Correct - but that is going from mini-dv to the VHS side. Not going from the VHS side to mini-dv side or from VHS to another VHS. Going from mini-dv and out to an external deck will, as I had thought it would, place that "window" on the dub. it is not your traditional TC window dub, but it works fine for my needs.
I have the Sr-vs30 as well and everything seems to come through at 30fps even though it is PAL source. Can this be changed? It is a pain as i keep getting artifacts around moving objects because of the 30fps to 25fps.
