Keep Vegas Movie Studio or move up to Vegas Pro?

I currently use Movie Studio 9 and am considering upgrading to 10. Although my projects are a little envolved, I do not produce projects professionally or for commercial use as this time. Why might I consider upgrading to Vegas Pro 10 rather than upgrading to Movie Studio HD Platinum Production Suite 10? Of course I would like to have the best software available, but is Pro 10 worth the addtional upgrade cost (about an added $350)? Also, it looks as though some of the audio tools that come with Movie Studio HD Platinum Production Suite are not available with Pro 10. Are there alternate tools in Pro 10, or is this an issue? Thanks for your advice.

I just recently upgraded from MSP to Pro and would be glad to tell you why I did it.

The version of MSP I had restricted me to 4 video and 4 audio track. Pro is unlimited on both. The new version of MSP allows 10 per. That was one reason. The biggest for me was envelope level audio FX and 3D text. There are a few video FX options on Pro that were not on my MSP though the majority were the same. I started working with video a year ago and settled on MSP because it was, in my opinion, hands down the best consumer program out there. I am glad I did because it made the transition to Pro very easy. I am sure others can give you reasons better than mine...

define 'envolved'? (involved, meaning complex?)

i recommend my students use / buy vms hd. yes, it's not as comprehensive as pro, but i rarely (if ever) see projects undertaken that require anything more.

of course bragging rights is another matter.....

The main thing that I would miss in the lower versions of Vegas would be access to scripts like Ultimate S and Excalibur. That and velocity envelopes.

The 4 track limit was the main reason I upgraded to Pro from Studio. BUT I produced one project on Studio and knew I needed more of everything.

I have never regretted the upgrade and have not looked back. Pro has helped me produce many projects I would not have otherwise been able to approach.

My primary reason for upgrading to Pro was for the unlimited video tracks. At the time Platinum 9 only had 4.

The masking feature and ability to script are handy. If Platinum 9 had 10 tracks when I needed them back then I'd probably still be using VMS Platinum. Now I don't worry about using one track for one event for specialized effect(s).

Imho if Platinum is doing what you need it to, no need to upgrade. Use that extra $350 to buy some nice effect programs to enhance your video to make them more interesting and import into VMSP 10. (:

The main reason why i did NOT upgrade for a while was that I thought that there were too many buttons, bells and whistles in the Pro version that I did not know about.

Then, as I missed some scripting features (like New Deshaker, the Proxy script etc.) and velocity envelopes and more tracks and the Compositing mode and ... and .... I found it was time to try to cope with all the new buttons.
To feel more safe I prepared for the SCVU course and took the exam - and I newer looked back since.

What a great tool Vegas Pro is.

Another big difference between Studio and Pro is Pro is 64bit which allows access to more memory for larger projects. This is very handy especially on machines that have more than 4 gigs. (Eugenia mentions this in the Studio forum).

Also, 64 bit Vegas pro renders seems to faster on quad or hex processors. I notice that all the CPU including hyperthreading are being utilized at almost 100% on my i7 machine whereas only runs at ~30% not utilizing hyperthreading cores when rendering VMSP 10 projects. Your mileage may vary depending on your workstation setup.

Thank you for your comments and advice. I have elected to go with VegasPro 10 in light of the 64 bit memory issue.
