Keeping Files Together

Ronboc wrote on 10/2/2002, 4:53 PM
My pc has a fairly-small harddrive, so I am trying to use an external FireWire harddrive to store my VV3 projects.

When I begin a session (whether capture or edit or whatever), how do I specify to VV3 that I want everything to be stored in that project's folder in the external drive? Ideally, I would like to have it default to the hard-drive every time I open VV3, and then I could direct it to the appropaiate folder/file. As it is now, I end up with files related to each project all over the place in both drives, some I've remembered to create and some that VV3 created wherever it wants to.

I've tried changing the settings in PREFERENCES and anywhere else I could find, but things don't always go where I thought I specified and certainly don't end up there the next time. Which means I end up searching everywhere.

HELP!

(Thanks, Ron)

Hi Ron,

Capture drive is specified in Vegas Capture.
Temp directory is specified in Options>Preferences
Prerenders and recordings are specified in Project properties

You might want to specify all the above when starting a new project. Including saving the capture file too.

BTW, If you open Vegas without the external FW drive attached, Vegas will re-set the drive specifications to defaults.

Once you check some of the preferences, look for a little box that sets those settings as default for all future projects, or some such language.

Marty -

Hey, thanks! That helps. Also explains why I have to go back and re-set everthing a lot, since sometimes I'm not using the external drive with VV3.

You had mentioned that VV3 resets the specifications back to default. Is there a way to change the defaults? If I use the internal laptop harddrive, would be nice to point the files to a certain unique location that I can then move to the external when I hook it back up.

Thanks again,
R

"Is there a way to change the defaults? "

Not that I know of... but you could save a "blank.veg" file on your FW drive and open that for each new project. You would still have to change the Temp directory in Prefs.

When you open the blank.veg, you might open the project props and save with the "always..." checkbox ticked.

Thanks, guy. Appreciate your help. I'm quite new to all this, so any and all assistance is appreciated. I'll give those suggestions a try. Also just figured out how to look back in the old FAQ's, and am surprised so one else has asked the same thing. Seems to me like it would be a realistic and frequent question, unless of course y'all have the luxury of only having to work with one client and one project at a time ;-})

Also, great work on the COW tutorials, Marty. Most of them are above me (right now), but I could see a lot of useful info that I will certainly visit again and again. Couldn't help but chuckle when I saw your video example of "A Day At The Zoo" in the Appearance tutorial. Wish I had the proverbial nickel for every time I ran into a roadbock or problem with Pinnacle Studio (can I mention names here?), before I stumbled across VV3.

Thanks!

Hey Ronboc,
If you are juggling a bunch of different jobs at the same time, you might also consider what we are currently doing.
We are putting all the media and the veg files for each individual job on separate firewire drives. Job A is on FW drive A. Job B on drive B.
When all is approved and put to bed, we are consolidating the jobs, archiving the elements onto DVD and then the drives are back in action.
A lot of jobs, should mean a lot (or at least Some) money.
By separating jobs onto individual drives, nothing gets mixed up (at 2AM).
Hope this helps.

Hi -

Great idea, Vicmilt. That's sorta what I'm trying to do. I have a 120G hard-drive, and am attempting to put each project in a separate folder in the drive (so far I've had enough room, but there's always the future to begin worrying about).

However, the problem still remains that I sometimes have a project simply "decide to show up" in a place other than where I thought I was putting it.

I can't seem to get a handle on which files and extensions should go where, right from the beginning when I CAPTURE. Totally screwed up everything over the weekend when I inadvertently loaded a small project into the resident C: drive and then later tried to move it to the external drive. Now I get a warning (forget the exact words) each time I start VV that it had a problem looking for a certain file. I click thru it and it seems to work ok, but it repeats each time.

Tried making myself a "cheat-sheet" or a cookbook-path of what to do where with each new project, but I can't seem to get too much repeatability on my actions and their results.

No complaints with VV3 or its functions, just having trouble understanding the settings (and it's most likely the loose nut behind the keyboard).

"Hit Any Key" (yeah right!)
