Keeping v9 and installing v10

Hi there

I have been using Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum ProPack for about a year now. Although I have had a few issues along the way, I have gotten round most of them, and the software has enabled me to edit and create videos in a fun and surprisingly comprehensive way.

I recently purchased Sony Vegas Movie Studio v10 HD Platinum Production Suite. I bought the full package, rather than an upgrade to my version 9, as the price at PC World was so reasonable.

My dilemma is whether I should remove v9 before installing v10, or, ideally I would like to have both versions installed if that is possible without messing things up. That way, I could try version 10 for a while and make sure it works well for me before I risk removing version 9. I have spent so much time setting up templates, tweaking settings etc that I would hate to have to 'start over' again.

My main questions regarding having both versions installed are:

1) Firstly, is it possible to have two versions (v9 & v10) installed at the same time? I am sure that I have read somewhere that it is possible but I can't find where I read that.

2) I have purchased several NewBlue Video Effects packages (such as Video Essentials I, II & III etc) - would I be easily able to access these third party plugins from both installed versions 9 & 10 of Vegas? Or will they only work in one installed version of SVMS?

3) One big issue I had with SVMS 9 was the 'missing audio' with some imported video files. This was because I had to ensure that I kept an older version of Quicktime installed, which I have managed to do. However, in SVMS 10 I believe that issue has been addressed so I think ver10 will expect latest version of Quicktime. Do you think this will this cause issues?

4) I think I would like to be able to open up my older video projects in my version 9 of SVMS as that was what created the videos. Maybe this is one of the main reasons for wanting to keep v9 installed alongside v10 - but is that an issue?

Any help with the above questions would be very much appreciated. I guess that if anyone has actually done what I want to do (i.e. they have both v9 & v10 of Vegas installed) I would be very keen to hear their experience and if they have any tips and advice, keeping old settings, using existing plugins and templates etc.

Many thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Hello Viddy:

Here are some answers based on my experience with VMS 9.0 and 10.0 installed on the same machine.

1) Firstly, is it possible to have two versions (v9 & v10) installed at the same time? I am sure that I have read somewhere that it is possible but I can't find where I read that.

Yep, you can definitely have 9.0 and 10.0 installed on the same machine and each install works just fine. I have 9.0 and I downloaded 10.0 as a trial. Later I upgraded to Pro 10.0 so I installed VMS 10.0 and installed Pro 10.0 . . . and VMS 9.0 continues to work fine.

2) I have purchased several NewBlue Video Effects packages (such as Video Essentials I, II & III etc) - would I be easily able to access these third party plugins from both installed versions 9 & 10 of Vegas? Or will they only work in one installed version of SVMS?

This is a yes as well. I too have NewBlue effects and VMS 9.0 and Pro 10.0 both "magically" find the plug-ins. I cannot speak for VMS 10.0 but since my VMS 9.0 and Pro 10.0 can find the plug-ins, I assume the same would be true for VMS 10.0.

Hmmm. Can't comment on this one. Someone else might know though.

4) I think I would like to be able to open up my older video projects in my version 9 of SVMS as that was what created the videos. Maybe this is one of the main reasons for wanting to keep v9 installed alongside v10 - but is that an issue?

As you may know, the Vegas projects are forward compatible, but not necessarily backwards compatible.

When you open your VMS 9.0 project in VMS 10.0, but sure to "Save As" to a new name in 10.0. You should be able to safely open the 9.0 files in 10.0 and then quit without saving, however, you might want to make a copy and rename before opening in 10.0. That way you can always open your 9.0 projects with 9.0 and you can open copies in 10.0.

Be careful with your naming so you can distinguish your 9.0 from your 10.0 and you should be fine. This also applies to your DVD-A projects, which I learned the hard way when I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing : o

To chime in for the following questions....

2. Yes, NBEffects work without issue in VMS10 - magically (and in the same way they did in VMS 9)

3. I am using the latest itunes/Quicktime files without issue with mp4 files - no issue. If you wan to upload a file to confirm, I am happy to check it out.

Hi there

Firstly I would like to say a sincere thanks to Kimberly and Markk for responding to my post with such useful information. Very grateful to you for taking the time etc.

Having read your comments I am definitely going to try installing v10 whilst keeping ver 9 installed too. This is what I really wanted to do anyway as it would appear to give me the best of both worlds - i.e. my version 9 is kinda tried and tested and had been the vehicle for some great video editing projects, but I am also keen to see what benefits, if any, are to be found in version 10.

Thanks again - if I come across anything that I think might be useful to others after I have installed the new version I will post my findings.

In the meantime... keep editing!!
