Is there a keyboard shortcut to move focus back to the timeline (for example, to return focus to the timeline after I click to choose a scope type in the scopes drop-down, or when I right-click media in the media bin)?
I changed Alt+0 to Alt+Spacebar in Global keyboard shortcuts, it's still a pain but it makes it a little easier when I'm using an fx & want to play the timeline,
I use a number of time-honored DAWs. Spacebar and Enter. That's all. Nothing else.
Do you mean spacebar/enter automatically grabs focus (if elsewhere) and acts as start/stop in those other apps? It would be amazing if Vegas could do that too
@ALO Download the trial version of Reaper, a Digital Audio Workstation.
It uses multiple floating windows, just like Vegas.
No matter which editing function window has the focus, Spacebar and Enter always take preemptive control over play and pause. Every other DAW I use, except Sound Forge 13, behaves like a grown up workstation.
Having several text editing windows, Vegas needs a precedence key sequence, such as Shift+Spacebar and Shift+Enter. But it doesn't even do that. It just sits there and plays away, while you are now deadclicking or making multiple text or function errors elsewhere, having missed the same cue point several times, and it just continues playing until you:
a) Fumble around and find Alt+0 (how handy is that?); or,
b) Fumble around for the mouse, and peer as you drag the pointer around to one of the miniscule player controls. It's an immature, unintuitive process.
OK, now I am somewhere 30 seconds downstream of where I needed to pause, reorient and find the spot all over again. Machiavellian. Wasted time: a minute or two from what should have been less than one second.
I "did" have Shift+Spacebar programmed. And it kept disappearing. Mercy.
This is not navigation. Production Editors are Pavlovian.
@Robert Johnston F11 F11 F12? tried it, F11 MinimizeDock, I see how it works but who wants the screen jumping around like that, I don't know what you mean by 'Would you believe ' 🤷♂️ & I'm assuming you forgot to tag someone else reg CTRL-SPACEBAR as I never mentioned that.
Out of all the options given above I'm sticking with my suggestion of 'I changed Alt+0 to Alt+Spacebar in Global keyboard shortcuts' , ,, press Alt+Spacebar that are right next to each other then spacebar again & you're playing & have all keyboard shortcuts working.
CTRL-SPACEBAR changes focus on Version 20. IF you hover about the Play icon on the preview screen it shows this as a shortcut. On the trimmer screen it only shows the spacebar. Did you try the CTRL-SPACEBAR option? to clarify, it doesn't change the Focus, but it does allow you play/pause the timeline regardless of what is focused. I understood that to be mark-y 's complaint, that you have to change focus to play timeline. With this option, you do not.

Thanks.
I tried it and it works in Vegas 18 as well. I prefer it over 20 because the Smart Upscale works better for me on some material.
I can live with that solution; at a fairly chiseled 75 it should take me only a few months to commit it to memory . . .
Since Ctlr+Spacebar doesn't actually return focus to the timeline, starting playback in that manner means that Enter and Ctrl+Enter are dead commands, meaning I miss my cut point as always.
Okay, only other suggestion I have, if you have a Contour Shuttle or similar device, you could define a macro for the keystrokes needed to do what you want. Have fun!!
Yes, I have a running conversation with @Grazie about the shuttle 2, if my work was actually bringing in some retirement income, I would be using it. Going to replace Ctrl+Spacebar with a custom command, will "try" to preserve it in some was in case it disappears into thin air again. I think the developers are at least aware of our need for consistency with other applications, or at least some consensus. Thanks for helping, @DMT3!
