I've put a very short tutorial and demo online detailing how I did this effect based on the Kid Stays in the Picture. I used Combustion and Vegas for this project.

If you're interested in doing a lot of this work Digital Fusion is also worth a serious look. Fairly cheap to buy at the moment, the upgrade to the new release will be cheap and it can be upgraded to the full fim grade version, again for less dollars than buying it outright.
When I say 'fairly cheap', all of this stuff is more expensive than Vegas but if you want to play with the big boys toys...
Bob.
Garo : I don't think there's any links concerning doing this in Vegas. Too bad.
Some say it can't be done but personnaly, i don't see why. At least, I guess we could do something that's very close. Nope?
I'm not saying it would be easier though. But just to do it one time, what's longer: learning a new program or applying the "workaround system" with an app somebody knows?
Ok... You asked for it. I tried it.
This ISN'T a series of photos, but I didn't want to cut those out. So I just went with what I had. It's kind of quick and dirty, but you can see that this is all *possible* in Vegas. This 7 sec segment took me way too long to set up, because I was figuring it out as I went. And the key is just OK, as I this wasn't really the point.
There are 5 layers here (only one is a video), each on a different track that has been made 3D from the Track Motion.
The Desert/Moon layer is WAY in the back, I think on a Z of 1900 and scaled way up to fill the background. The next layer up is the Living Room on a Z of 1100 and is scaled up as well. Both of these had to be large enough to fill the screen from Pan Right to Pan Left.
Next layer up was good ol' Calvan and Hobs at a Z of 500, followed by Amy's friend, Shiela, on a Z of 300. Walt was at the 0 Z, so nothing done there except the key (which had Chroma Blur, Secondary Colour ((boosting the greens)) and then the Chroma Key).
All of these are parented to the Walt Track and that track is then put into 3D. I did a rotation on the X axis, but could have easily done a dolly or crane-style shot.
Now, this isn't NEARLY as cool as either of the examples above, but I wanted to see this done in purely Vegas. (Sure took it's sweet time rendering - 39+ min for this 7 sec sequence on my PIV 2.8Ghz w/1Gig RAM.)

Thanks. After I re-read my post above, I have to make one clarification. That 39 min rendered was for a DV AVI. The WVM (256K) render in around 2 min.
Thanks again.
Well, some of the files are pretty darn big, but they're being uploaded now.
The Calvan & Hobbs and the Shiela graphics came from the web, but I have no rights to them, so I'd recommend them not being used for anything other than personal use.
I created the Living Room and background (Moon & Desert), so no problems there (though I'm using them for a HOW TO video, still in production).
Hope this is useful.
