Lag when editing a vertical or 4k clip

petko wrote on 8/11/2024, 10:51 AM

Hello!

I have a Vegas 21 Build 315 and when I try to edit a vertical video (HD quality) from my Panasonic GH6, video preview lags to the point where I'm unable to edit, But editing the same type clips that are horizontal works normally. (same setting, file format, resolution, coder). Only difference between clips is that one is horizontal and other is vertical.
I also have the same unusable lag while trying to edit a 4k clip.

I run Windows 11, i9-10900K, 48gb Ram, RTX 3070, and all files are on m2 SSD drive. I don't see why this spec should struggle.

I don't see your problem or laggy performance until I add more files to the timeline, the delay is caused by building audio peaks, it is the same in VP22b93. Not sure if this is a new bug or it was always like that, strange thing is building peaks uses only a tiny amount of resources . It's not directly related to your problem though

First playback is with only your file on timeline, 2nd playback is with multiple other files and waveform peaks being build in background. I tried the same on another editor and playback of your file is identical in both situations indicating an efficiency problem with waveform peak building

@UltraVista Different PC's I guess because as I wrote 'I can do pretty much anything I want with them',. Can you add your system specs to your Signature? I just added multiple UHD clips, multiple versions of the OP's files 4k & the 9:16 one, an audio file + effects. The final AI Style transfer fx that I added to an Adjustment track slowed the playback a bit but I saw no noticeable 'lag' @ Best (Full)

This is just a fraction of 15min I recorded of me playing with it continuously loop playing it & adjusting.

@Gid It turned out to be an age old problem, building audio peaks on a hard drive instead of SSD. I saw 100% utilisation. CPU and GPU were doing next to nothing. I don't know if it's fair to call it a bug, other Video editors don't have the same problems with HDD's it's easy enough to move the file to SSD, and some would be shocked at the very notion of editing from a HDD.

So, I'm not surprised that the clips work fine for others. My question is why it lags for me and what can I do to fix it D:
