landscape / portrait BG "attached" to the image

I am working with about 150 images in the timeline. 130 or so are in landscape mode and the rest are in portrait mode. Is it possible to attach "black sides" to the portrait mode files so that they completely overlay the image that they are on top of? The problem becomes a real nuisance when I am dissolving from landscape<>portrait image. The sides of the portrait file remain as the old image instead of a nice black BG appearing. I hope this makes sense and is solved easily!

How are you transitioning from one photo to the next? You should simply be overlapping them on the same video track. This way the transition will include the black background on the sides of the portrait photo automatically. With simple fades, the edges of the previous landscape photo will fade to black with the new picture fading in. Other transitions will transition to black edges.
