Landscape video becomes portrait when uploading to Facebook story

zenoo wrote on 4/15/2023, 9:43 PM

Hi I am using Vegas Pro 12 to create time-lapse video which I would like to post on Facebook story. I recorded the video in landscape mode. After editing everything and rendering, the video becomes portrait and squished when I try to upload it to Facebook story. I want to post it as landscape. If I try to upload the raw unedited video directly from my phone, it uploads as a landscape video. Can anyone help me with this issue. I feel like I need to play with render setting to fix this problem. Thanks in advance!

Is your rendered file "squished" when played on your pc? Or is it only "squished" after Facebook have recompressed it for streaming?

zenoo wrote on 4/16/2023, 1:11 AM

No it plays in landscape when I play it on my pc and phone. It only becomes squished when I upload it on facebook story.

If the file plays correctly on your pc it would appear to be a Facebook problem. But to be certain post media info on your file so we can check there's nothing wrong with it. @zenoo Hi, you have to render at a 9:16 aspect ratio, 1080x1920 Portrait mode rather then 1920x1080 Landscape mode,

EricLNZ wrote on 4/16/2023, 6:59 AM

Hi @Former user That doesn't make sense? Zenoo's image is landscape and if it's the usual 16:9 the aspect ratio is 1.7777:1 which is between Facebook's requirements of between "9:16 and 1.91:1".

At least that's how I read it.

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 7:07 AM

@EricLNZ Yeah, I'm not 100% sure what they mean when they say squished , I'm presuming like this 🤷‍♂️

EricLNZ wrote on 4/16/2023, 7:14 AM

@Former user the indication was that it appears "squished" as portrait yet raw footage is okay. Let's wait for media info to see if there's anything strange about the rendered file.

I'm not a Facebook user but looking at one page I occasionally view I see they have landscape images so Facebook do do them.

EricLNZ wrote on 4/16/2023, 7:16 AM

Another thought. Is "Facebook Story" different to "Facebook"?

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 7:32 AM

@EricLNZ I've only toyed with the Story option, on the PC you can't upload videos without going through another app or whatever it is so I never bothered with it.

You can from your phone tho, so If I load a Landscape vid it looks as expected

On the PC the same view without the Black bar fill 🤷‍♂️

We need to see @zenoo pictures.

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 7:35 AM

@EricLNZ Yes FB takes Landscape & portrait vids, FB Story is a sort of quick chat type thing, It's a bit pointless & nobody I know uses it, you can see in the pic above, 'All stories' - 2 🤷‍♂️

& on the main FB page it shows at the top,

PS, Google - 'When you create a story on Facebook, you can share photos, videos and posts that will only be visible for 24 hours.' ,

Here is what I mean by squished. Sorry I don't know the correct term haha. First picture is how I see it on my phone. Second picture is when I try to upload it on Facebook. If I try to upload unedited video from my phone then it uploads fine in landscape.

@zenoo Hi, interesting, I'm just trying some stuff on my Pc & phone.. .

So you've edited this clip on a PC in Vegas, then transferred it to your phone so you can upload to Stories?

If so, can you share a pic of the project & render settings, 👍

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 4:39 PM

@zenoo It's not just you,

This picture I posted in the comments above is unedited landscape footage from my phone directly uploaded to FB Stories, as you see it's fine

So I created a clip in Vegas, & I meant to render it as MP4 AVC 1280x720 just like yours but forgot & uploaded it at 3840x2160 60fps, ,

Transferred it to my phone through a cable & uploaded to FB Stories, the size difference made no difference, it was still squished, . I like squished 😉but I'd say it was more stretched than squished 😮

I'll have a play & let you know what I come up with, unless someone gives an answer in the meantime 👍

PS, same look on PC, so it's not the phone that's a cause. I'm going to try some different clips,

Nothing to do with render settings and most likely nothing you can do about it except attempt a different way of posting the video.

Facebook & Instagram are platforms that are notorious for doing random switches on video formats. I haven't been in the game for a while, but I suggest looking up the ideal resolution. If the most upto date search yields that what you're doing is correct, then it's most definitely a bug related to the phone app (which is also typical of facebook)

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 5:21 PM

@zenoo I uploaded a 1920x1080 MP4 AVC created in Magix Movie Studio, no stretched distortion this time,

So I just rendered a 1920x1080 MP4 AVC clip from Vegas & that seems fine,

I'm going to try a 1280x 720 from Magix & see,

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 5:23 PM

@Mohammed_Anis Really the video should be rendered in a portrait mode then I'm sure it will be fine, but I want to know why unedited phone clips load as they are with no stretching but the OP's Vegas edited 1280x720 ones get stretched,

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 5:45 PM

Ok, I thought maybe the clip size, so I created a 1280 x 720 using Magix Movie Studio, it uploaded fine 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤯😂

So back to sq one I created another 1280 x 720 in Vegas, & it too uploaded fine 🤷‍♂️

Sorry at the moment I haven't a clue 🤷‍♂️ except one strange thing happened near the beginning of my tests,

I uploaded this clip & the first time it loaded it was stretched, I deleted it from FB

but I uploaded it a second time because I deleted it too soon & still wanted to check something but this time it loaded correctly 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

zenoo wrote on 4/16/2023, 5:55 PM

@Former user Seems like a bug with FB then. My original renders were in 1920x1080 and they did not work for me so I tried 1280x720 and it made no difference. Can you please share your render settings with me just so I know I am not doing anything stupid. I started an automotive repair shop and was planning to upload a bunch of time-lapse videos of my repairs on my FB page for marketing purposes but its all good if FB has a bug. I really appreciate your help as well as others who are trying to help me. Thanks!! 🙏

Former user wrote on 4/16/2023, 6:06 PM

@zenoo This was the last setting i used, the third picture above this comment, 1280 x 720 in Vegas, it's either a preset or was just one of the presets that at some point i changed the Frame size, I don't normally fiddle with the other settings, I hope you work it out

EricLNZ wrote on 4/16/2023, 7:42 PM

@zenoo has VP12 so won't have Magix HEVC/AAC mp4 templates. MainConcept AVC/AAC is probably where he should go. Or Sony AVC/MVC.

zenoo wrote on 4/16/2023, 9:57 PM

So I rendered it again in MainConcept AVC/AAC like @EricLNZ mentioned and used @Former user render settings which were pretty much the same as what I had. The video was still stretched/squished I when uploaded it from my personal profile. But when I uploaded it from my business page it was in landscape. Its strange but it ended up working out for me. Thank you guys for all your help! I really appreciate it.👍

That's good. You got there in the end.
