laptop

I'm contemplating a new computer dedicated only to video editing. Would a laptop be a mistake? I'm looking at a HP dv9843cl Notebook w/ 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8100.
4 GB Memory. NVIDIA Geforce 8600M Graphics card.
2.3 GB Video Memory w/512MB dedicated.
320 GB 5400 Hard Drive.
Blu-Ray ROM w/ SuperMulti DVD R/RW Double Layer Drive.
I'm mainly editing in SD but I have a Sony HC3 HD camcorder and eventually would like to edit in HD. (if it's worth it.) Actually the SD is excellent. Appreciate you input in this forum.
One more quesion. Will Vegas 8 platinum work on a Mac? and if so, which ones?

Yes, a laptop would be a mistake for a dedicated video editing machine. You should get a full PC, which has more space to get hot during encodings and it also allows for bigger monitors.

You just need a modern PC with 2 to 3 GBs of RAM, and a 128MB graphics card. You don't need these expensive 512 MB cards as Vegas doesn't use the extra power. I'd tell you to get a faster CPU than 2.1 Ghz instead.

Vegas does not work on a Mac.

Correct that Vegas does not work on a Mac with Apple Leopard operating system - but it works well on the newer Intel based Macs when you build them with Windows XP (or Vista) using Apple BootCamp.

I do my editing on a Mac Pro with 2 x Xeon Quads under Win XP sp2++ and 1) the machine is Rock stable and 2) editing, preview and rendering is f a s t.

I bought the Mac Pro because it was the cheapest way to get to a double Xeon Quad with 1600 MHz memory access.

If you are interested search for the rendertest-thread in the full Vegas forum - it shows Vegas-test results for many combinations of CPU's, memory and disks - and may give you an idea about where to spend the money.

Thanks for you response. I'll try to make room for another desktop.
