I think DV Rack at the same time would be very optimistic as it uses a lot of CPU power.
As to using the Alesis, should work fine. Let us know how it goes as I'm very interested in the larger version of the Alesis.

I am seriously considering buying an Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire.

Two questions:

After loading the Alesis drivers for PC will I -
Be able to record to Vegas instead of the provided software.
Will Vegas "see" the Alesis as the digital source like it does the Layla now?
further...
Will I be able to leave my Echo Layla soundcard installed,
or will the Alesis want to replace my existing card?

I would prefer to keep the layla onboard since I will pull the mixer for live band gigs.

I don't want to buy this mixer if it won't work with Vegas.

Thanks for any help...sorry to be ignorant.

I faced the same set of considerations recently. Considered Mackie and Motu FireWire interfaces but concluded I would need to bring two laptops to the show. One to capture video, the other to record multi track audio.
I let go of the plan finally and settled for a Yamaha AW1600 recorder that suits my needs quite well.

Probably best to contact Echo support on this. I have a Layla 24 and would be interested in what they say.

Re: the Alesis mixer being friendly with Vegas (or vice/versa), why don't you post another message with that question in the title.

I just flicked a Mackie 1202VLZ-Pro and replaced witha Phonic 8 mix Firewire mixer (16 inputs to PC and 2 from). Sounds no 'worse' than the Mackie. Goes well straight -off with my HP Pavillion laptop.

Do be careful to check exactly WHAT gets Firewired to a PC for a given mixer - got all keen on a Behringer which transpired only to send a pair of channels !

I have used Vegas as a multi-track recorder, but have run into many issues in that it cannot record timecode and or a timecode stamp for the files. Anyone have any ideas?

jbolley wrote on 10/10/2006, 8:58 AM
you can slave or generate timecode if you have the correct hardware, no problem running in sync with another device. Time stamped broacast wav import is implimented - it's a real shame export isn't as well.

Anyone know if BWF export is going to be implemented as a version upgrade to 7 or not?

As i mentioned in Video, I did purchase an Alesis 8 FW. It does recomend that you disable your onboard/current sound card. The answer is to set up two (or more) profiles and pick the right one at startup. The Alesis records just fine into Vegas, I didn't even load the provided software.
