I'll bet your laptop has a numlock key. When that is pressed, the following mapping is generally used:

789 789
456 uio
123 jkl

There should be small numbers imprinted on those keys. Many times they're on the front of the key instead of the top.

RichR, if you're interested in doing a fair amount of laptop editing and like the numpad workflow (I do) then for about 15.00 you can buy a USB numpad that works great w/Vegas. Targus, Kensington, Belkin, and I'm sure others have them available. I've got a Targus and Belkin. One small and one full size.

Spot, I use workstations at my studio(my full time job) and I edit on a laptop at home, editing 2 weddings a week for a studio in North Jersey. (my part time job, because they don't pay me enough) Of course I can use all the speed I can get at the studio and at home. I'll have to look into using the numpad more.
