Large 4K files from iPhone to Vegas

Camaxide wrote on 2/9/2016, 2:55 AM
Hi, I've got a new iPhone which records 4K videos and I want to be able to edit the footage in Vegas. I first got a message telling me I had to install the right codec (through quicktime) which I did - then after a restart I would still get an error saying I cant load the file but no why.
I then tried a smaller file of about 300mb - which loaded just fine (from the same phone, also in 4K).
I assume this then has to do with size limitation of some sort, The files I try to load is about 10-12 GB each.
However - I have 100+ GB free disk space, and also lots of free ram from my total of 32 - so I don't see why it should not load.
I've tried to find a post about this on the forum but wasn't able to find one (only about large files out - not in). Is there a way to adjust settings or something to allow for the loading of these files? Or do I have to use an additional program to split up my video before loading them into Vegas then re-unite them?
Thanks in advance - I really like using Vegas for my editing needs - and with 4K coming up - large video-files will be a must to be able to work on :)

Apple has not upgraded quicktime to 64-bit so file size matters. I would see if FFMPEG can convert your media to a different container like .MXF, .avi, .mp4

ffmpeg -i <filename.mov> -vcodec copy -acodec copy <newfilename.mxf/.avi/.mp4>

This will give a new file with the same video and audio info inside the .mxf container. .MXF in vegas will not be limited to file size or file quantities.

ffprobe on a filename will show the video stream formats. If the audio is compressed, you can convert the audio to PCM. Since MXF has mutiple channels, you need to map the stereo audio to the right mono channels. An addition like:

-acodec pcm_s24le -ar 48000 -newaudio -map_audio_channel 0:1:0:0:1:0 -map_audio_channel 0:1:1:0:2:0

will convert the compressed audio to PCM and map L/R channels to 1st two channels.

Seems hard, but once you have the command worked out, you can use it to batch all your files from the camera.

I recommend to convert the ProRes files to Cineform - what runs is fine in Vegas. I use TMPGenc 6 for that (a low speed conversion, but I use up to 6 instances for TMPGenc to speed that up).

The iPhone doesn't shoot ProRes. I believe the files are AVC/H.264 MP4 in a QuickTime wrapper. As Aaron pointed out, Vegas Pro uses the 32-bit version of QuickTime so this causes a problem with large files or large numbers of files.

If the ffmpeg command that Aaron suggested works, I would recommend you use that. Just rewrap the QuickTime files in an MXF container. This would be the best approach.

Well, fine if it is not ProRes.

When I edited files from an older iphone 5 I converted it to XAVC-S using TMPGenc. Was also fine for editing.

<newfilename.mxf/.avi/.mp4>
Do I chose either ,mxf .avi or .mp4? and should the <> brackets stay??
Camaxide wrote on 2/9/2016, 10:08 AM
I got it running by removing brackets and going with only .mp4 at the end. However - the audio part I could not make work - it said 'newaudio' could not be found - do I need a different build of ffmpeg maybe that is compiled with this command included?

The audio part was for MXF files which support multichannel PCM audio. You selected MP4 which requires the audio stay the same.

If you want to upload a stop start(1sec) clip, I will figure out the command for you. I just do not know enough about the format in the streams coming from the iPhone.

See if they open and convert in GoPro Studio. They used to.

Thanks astar and JohnnyRoy - I got it all running and my files now import smoothly into vegas. the file is just a few kb different in size from the original and both video and sound is as the original. I ran the first line posted by astar. thanks a lot :)
