Late NAB Post

Ok... I should have been chatting up NAB earlier, but I'm just now settled back in. I KNOW I'm settled in when I start playing Halo again - *sheesh*
I wanted to shout out a great hoot and hollar for DSE and all he did for NAB's Post Production gig this year. All the gang at VASST, in fact! I just saw Spot the most. Wow. What a busy guy he was. And a fantastic educator! Anyone who hasn't seen him speak, you're missing something! Catch him when you can!
And speaking of great speakers! VICTOR MILT! Awesome stuff!!! I think I caught every single one of his classes! And I'd catch every future one if I could. Not only did he have great info packed into every class, he was just a darn nice guy! And funny as heck! Lots of energy and amusing anticdotes and just a great presence. I've only seen parts of his video so far ("Light It Right"), but what I've seen is highly recommendable. I actually really liked the study in other masters and the history. All very interesting and well presented.
Nope... I'm not associated with VASST or Mr. Milt in any way and I'm not getting a single pennie for my happy endorcement.
It's just Good Stuff!

Thanks for the great comments, guys! Matthew, thanks for all your participation in the classes, and it was fun being able to show your vid as a case study in a couple instances. Hope to see you guys at future training events down the road. NAB was just too much fun. I saw less of the show floor than any previous years, but had a better time than I can ever remember having. I think we must have met at least 100 people from the various boards last week.

Hey MJRoddie -

Thanks so much for the fine reviews, but I had SO MUCH FUN!

What an incredible audience of trained, attentive people and with a great sense of humor - ya know, I'm a tv commercial director... everyone knows my work - nobody knows my name - part of the job spec.

But having people come up to me, out of the crowds, throughout the week that I spent at NAB and say, "Hey you're Victor MIlt?? I saw your session on lighting and...", was thrilling - 145,000 people, and I was being recognized - wow, what a trip. I never had a "face" before.

So I want to thank DSE and Manny Frances for urging me to make the video, and then convincing me to fly to Las Vegas, and teach. I really tried to give everyone that came, something to take home and I think that the video will hold the same value - some people will learn a lot, but I believe there are some tricks there for everyone.

I come to this whole shebang via my love of Vegas Video (started with V.V 2 and went on from there), and this forum which I was introduced to when I needed some help.

I've been a professional in commercial media for over 41 years, and the business has been very good to me. When I started, you couldn't make movies unless you had a family member in the union, and a lot of money to invest. Today, you are only limited by your imagination and willingness to work hard.

I was SO inspired by the other speakers and demos. The new hardware and software is mind blowing - I have seen the future, and HDV rules. Sony cameras and decks, Vegas Video, DVDA, Serious Magic keying, Vasst.com resources, articles and just plain help - these are the active parts of my current career (which is still very hot, thank you). I was also re-inspired by the work of "young" (well younger than ME) directors, like yourself, and Franco Saatchi, and Ray Schlogel and the dozens of other people I had the chance to meet and speak with.

I agree, Spot (DSE) speaks - you learn... simple as that.

I wish all of you other folks who read this, to get on board with the second greatest thing that life has to offer - the chance to communicate with your fellow humans in the most powerful, and now accessible, media ever invented - and we ALL are the pioneers... now... will someone help me down from this darn soapbox??

Vic mentioned me !!! Seriously man, thanks for all the words of encouragement Vic, during the show and since. I've gotta say that your class was awesome and as I interpreted your approach to lighting its right in line with my way of shooting ... make it look right with what you have, if it doesn't look right its not so change it till it does.

Without wanting to sound like to much of a kiss ass, if ya missed his classes in Vegas, don't miss the DVD, its almost like being there.

And though I've said it to Spot off the board, I need to echo Vic's sentiment to both DSE and Mannie ... thanks for a great time and a tremendous opportunity.
